Parents should't have to pay a fee to sit next to their children when flying, according to the White House, which is moving to ban airlines from charging families extra to be seated together. Under a rule proposed Thursday by the Department of Transportation, airlines would be required to seat parents and kids 13 and younger together free of charge when adjacent seating is available at booking. The idea of seating adults with their younger children "is common sense and also seems like something that should be standard practice," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said.

After years of soaring housing costs, renters may finally have something to celebrate. Economists say the most recent Consumer Price Index (CPI) report signals that inflation in the rental market is easing, giving millions of Americans some financial relief. And with rents markedly slower to ease than other spending categories, the downshift highlights that the ferocious inflation that slammed households starting in 2022 is relenting in earnest. "Rent was one of the key factors keeping inflation elevated," said Stephen Brown, an economist with investor advisory firm Capital Economics. "That's obviously quite a good sign that overall inflation is probably now heading back towards 2%."

Many so-called zombie mortgages date back to the 2008 financial crisis, and consumer advocates warn a new wave of zombies could be on the horizon — this time, from all the home equity credit lines taken out during the pandemic. Rohit Chopra of the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said his agency has seen an increase in complaints about zombie mortgages, with some debt collectors skipping steps in the foreclosure process. "Many times, we're hearing they're targeting older homeowners, people who may be sitting on a lot of home equity," Chopra said. "A lot of this is totally under the radar, and much of these practices are illegal."

The inclusive world of Barbie is expanding yet again — this time, with the first-ever blind Barbie doll and a Black Barbie with Down syndrome. Toy manufacturer Mattel, Inc. announced the two new additions to its Fashionista line on Tuesday. The company worked closely with the American Foundation for the Blind to ensure the blind Barbie doll accurately depicted individuals with blindness or low vision, while making sure that the doll was still accessible. "As we wrap up Disability Pride month, we believe this is an excellent way to make children worldwide feel included, regardless of their abilities," American Foundation for the Blind's Tony Stephens told CBS News.

The best state to retire in the U.S. is also one of the smallest, according to a new ranking. Based on its high marks for affordability, access to high quality health care, overall well-being and other categories, #Delaware, known as the "First State," earned the top spot in Bankrate's annual ranking of the best states to retire in the U.S. "While you might not think of Delaware as a typical retirement haven, it has many strong selling points for retirees," Bankrate analyst Alex Gailey told CBS MoneyWatch.
