He has 20 years of local government experience and has represented cities and other local government entities as both an in-house and contracted local government attorney since 2004. The Cuban American Bar Association, among others, recently submitted a formal request to all members of the Miami-Dade County Commission and Mayor Levine Cava, seeking their consideration to name the new Miami-Dade courthouse in honor of Osvaldo Soto. “Throughout his life, Mr. Soto was a trailblazing attorney, civil rights advocate and lifelong defender of equality and justice for the Hispanic and minority communities in South Florida,” said Javier A. Ley-Soto, CABA president. “His name would serve as a meaningful tribute to our community’s past and a beacon for its future.” The new courthouse is expected to be completed in 2025 and is being built near the historic Miami-Dade County Courthouse located at 73 West Flagler Street, Miami.

In case you missed it, the 50th Annual Public Employment Labor Relations Forum was a big success! The City, County, and Local Government Law and Labor and Employment Law sections hosted the October 17–18 event at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista. Special thanks to Program Chairs Glenn Thomas, Lewis, Longman & Walker, and Debbie Brown, AWI-CH, Brown Law & Consulting, who recruited some of the nation’s top labor and employment law professionals as presenters.🙌🏼 The agenda included a free, half-day workshop on the Special Magistrate process and careers in ADR benefiting Special Magistrates and practitioners. The main conference included a 50-year retrospective on PERA plus commentary on what the next 50 years will bring. Our speakers shared insights about public sector discipline and discharge, elected officials and their roles and risks, the law of unilateral change, the new face of protected concerted activity, the unanswered questions on SB256 and SB 1746, an 11th Circuit update, and more. Last but not least, here's a shout-out to our sponsors! Thank you to these firms for their support: Brown Law & Consulting, GrayRobinson, P.A., Bryant Miller Olive P.A., and Langbein ADR Services. CCLGL Section annual sponsors also received special recognition at the conference. Thank you to Bryant Miller Olive P.A. and Lewis, Longman & Walker for their support of the section.

The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division needs volunteers to assist disaster survivors in the aftermath of recent hurricanes. Please consider offering your time to provide free legal services through the YLD's Disaster Relief Hotline. All Florida Bar members eligible to practice may volunteer to provide basic civil legal services for people who cannot afford legal representation in non-fee-generating cases. You can return calls placed to the YLD’s 1-800 hotline or at FEMA centers. Volunteers should have a basic understanding of common problems experienced by disaster victims, such as landlord/tenant and other housing problems, consumer protection matters, and home repair contracts.
