📽 (24 October 2024) | 🌲 Ascent MKE, the world's tallest hybrid mass timber building, was featured in Financial Times' latest video "Mass Timber: The Future of Construction." The recognition further highlights the global significance of the project and its contribution to sustainable urban development. More key aspects of Ascent MKE: 1. Innovative Hybrid Design💡: Combining a six-story concrete base with 19 stories of mass timber, Ascent MKE showcases the versatility and potential of engineered wood. 2. Environmental Impact🌱: The use of mass timber significantly reduces the building's carbon footprint, aligning with global sustainability goals and setting new standards for eco-friendly construction. 3. Fire Ratings🔥: The project proved three fire ratings to qualify for Type I building, including the horizontal floors and ceilings achieved a two-hour fire rating, the steel connectors achieved a two-hour fire rating, and the structural timber frame (glulam columns) achieved a world-first 3-hour fire resistance rating. 4. Economic Viability💰: Ascent MKE demonstrates that innovative, sustainable construction can be both environmentally responsible and economically feasible. 5. Rapid Construction⏱️: Using prefabricated mass timber elements allowed for efficient on-site building assembly, reducing overall construction time. Advancing the Industry 🌎 As highlighted in the Financial Times video, mass timber construction is gaining momentum globally. Work on Ascent MKE and other mass timber projects contributes to a growing body of knowledge about mass timber construction, helping to shape the future of wood as a renewable and sustainable building material. This is a #TrueStory favorite of ours as well! In fact, you can get a behind-the-scenes look with WoodWorks on a video tour and project team interviews from during the build at cdsmith.com/ascent. #MassTimberConstruction #MassTimberBuilding #Milwaukee #Wisconsin
Have you ever seen the time-lapse of #AscentMKE? This is one of the core reasons we love #masstimber. It took ~6 months to build the 6-story concrete podium, and then ~6 months to build the 19-story mass timber superstructure above. The superstructure was built 40% faster (~6 days per floor) than if built in concrete. 78% fewer construction workers on site. The project was built in 23 months, ~3.5 months faster than with concrete.

💝October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and C.D. Smith Construction is proud to support! During the month, we sold pink logo wear. We donated a portion of the proceeds to the Agnesian HealthCare Foundation’s Carol Hyland Caring for You Fund, which assists families facing financial hardships during cancer treatment or long-term illness care. Pictured are C.D. Smith team members proudly wearing their pink gear as Kim Laws, Agnesian HealthCare Foundation, Interim Leader, accepts a $1,500 donation to the fund. “Supporting the communities where we live, work, and play is essential to our core values. Selling and wearing shirts in solidarity with those battling life-threatening illnesses is just one small way we demonstrate our commitment, and we’re proud to do it," says Connie Coon, VP of HR. “The positive response from our employees has been overwhelming, and we’re exploring the possibility of expanding the campaign in 2025 and will continue to promote wearing pink all year!” Together, we can make a difference! 💖 #BreastCancerAwareness #WearPink #SupportTheCause #CaringForYou #CommunitySupport #PinkForACause #TogetherWeCan SSM Health C.D. 📣 Kewaskum, WI (October 14, 2024)—The final steel beam was placed on the new Kewaskum Community Center, marking a significant milestone in the construction of this vital community hub. BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE: 🤝 Located in the heart of Kewaskum, the new center will be more than just a building; it will be a central gathering place for residents of all ages. Designed to be a multifunctional space, it will foster community engagement and support local government operations. The facility will house the village hall and police department, providing essential services under one roof. Additionally, there will be a dedicated community space for events, meetings, and programs, ensuring that residents have a place to come together for various activities. The Kewaskum Community Center is set to become a cornerstone for civic and community activities. TOPPING OUT | A TIME-HONORED TRADITION: 🌲 The topping-off ceremony marked the completion of the building’s framework, a major accomplishment in the construction process. The Village of Kewaskum celebrated the achievement of this milestone with key stakeholders and community members. Following tradition, Kewaskum officials participated in the signing of a steel beam adorned with a small evergreen tree before it was hoisted to the structure’s highest point. Known as the “construction Christmas tree,” it symbolizes good luck and safety for the remainder of the project. Though its origins are unclear, this tradition celebrates both the progress and the continued journey toward completion. LOOKING AHEAD: 👀 This project improves accessibility and fosters community by creating a central hub for events, meetings, and programs. It represents a forward-thinking approach to community development, ensuring that Kewaskum can meet the needs of its residents for years to come. With the framework complete, this event symbolizes the progress and unity of the Kewaskum community as we look forward to completing their new community center. 🌲Mass timber is transforming the skyline—and the planet🌍. In recent years, the construction industry in the United States has seen a shift, with an increasing number of mass timber projects. The growing movement toward sustainability has driven the adoption of this innovative building material, which offers numerous benefits, including reduced carbon emissions, accelerated construction schedules and enhanced aesthetics. Wisconsin Stats 🌿 According to WoodWorks.org, as of December 2023, 28 mass timber projects have been started or completed in Wisconsin, and 18 more are in the design process. C.D. Smith Construction is actively involved in five remarkable mass timber projects, including Ascent, the world’s tallest mass timber hybrid tower. Embracing Timber ✨ Mass timber, characterized by large solid wood panels, beams, and columns as load-bearing components in construction, has emerged as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional building materials. By utilizing responsibly sourced wood, these projects contribute to reduced carbon emissions and promote a greener future. These awe-inspiring structures challenge traditional notions of what is possible with wood as a primary building material. As the United States and the world seek sustainable construction solutions, mass timber has emerged as a game-changer. It has transitioned from a trend into a full-fledged movement toward sustainability. 🔗Visit cdsmith(dot)com/mass-timber-construction#news to stay updated on the latest in mass timber and discover how today’s projects are shaping the future of sustainable construction. #masstimber #sustainableconstruction #buildgreen #futureofconstruction #Milwaukee #MadisonWI #Wisconsin #WinonaMN #Minnesota #AppletonWI
