Lessons from Learning Module #2 Climate Collective and The World Bank’s GPSA Green Accountability Technology Accelerator. Lillian Alexander, Director of Impact at Mercy Corps Ventures, joined our recent learning module to discuss the core elements of building a strong impact measurement & management (IMM) practice. Top takeaways 👇 💡What is impact? It’s the positive (or negative) change your organization creates over time. It's iterative, and is all about understanding the long-term effects of your work. 💡Tools for IMM: Theory of Change, Five dimensions of impact, and customer/end user surveys are all tools you can use for IMM. Find the one that works best for you at your current stage! Misconceptions around IMM debunked: ❌ “It’s too early for us to focus on IMM.” ✅ Building a strong IMM foundation is valuable at any stage. ❌ “IMM is too expensive and time-consuming.” ✅ IMM doesn’t have to be expensive. Use existing systems and feedback channels to gather insights. ❌ “IMM is only for proving positive impact.” ✅ IMM is about learning and improving. Being authentic and sharing what didn’t go as planned will go a long way in building trust. 🪶 Mercy Corps Ventures is an early-stage impact investor focused on building climate resilience and financial inclusion for communities in emerging markets. Thanks to Lillian for sharing your insights! 📣 "Throughout this process, we have worked with Indigenous communities in many parts of the world... Some say that they come from the stars, some from the rivers, others from the forests. To work together effectively, we stay focused on the worldview that nature is one for all peoples and communities, otherwise we slip into a very generalized debate." This week we're getting to know the co-founders of Savimbo: Drea Burbank, Fernando Lezama, and Hector Jhony Lopez. We explore their approach to collaborating with Indigenous communities and building digital tools for #GreenAccountabiility in the Colombian Amazon. We are proud to welcome Terrasos into the Climate Collective community! Mariana Sarmiento founded Terrasos in 2013, inspired by a vision for Colombia where responsible economic development goes hand-in-hand with ecosystem protection. Terrasos specializes in biodiversity compensation and environmental investments and collaboration is a key pillar of their exceptional work. As Mariana emphasizes, "We need to work as a team and share knowledge to solve problems and challenges. In order to overcome the challenges, it is necessary to democratize the management of biodiversity and direct it towards results." What makes Terrasos stand out: 🏞️ Pioneers of Habitat Banks: Inspired by successful models abroad, Terrasos spearheaded Colombia's first habitat bank project. This innovative approach streamlines conservation efforts by allowing companies to collectively invest in long-term (30-year) projects to maximize impact. 💫Shaping the future of conservation: Terrasos is a leader in developing a robust market for biodiversity credits. They've created a protocol to issue voluntary credits, making it easier for businesses to meet regulatory requirements and corporate social responsibility goals. Terrasos has sold over $1.8M in credits in Colombia, and actively contributes to setting standards with the Biodiversity Credit Alliance. 💯Holistic approach: With over 10 years of experience in this space, Terrasos tackles environmental challenges through a holistic lens, measuring the economic, social, and environmental impacts of their work. IDB Lab, Partnerships for Forests, Mulago, and Regen Network Development PBC have all been key collaborators in Terrasos's work on Habitat Banks and high-integrity biodiversity credits. There is so much the world can learn from Terrasos work - in Colombia and beyond - and we’re looking forward to supporting them to further scale corporate nature action across Latin America. How do you make sure a carbon credit is backed by strong data integrity? Together with RMI we’ve been investigating this question and have released a Buyers Guide to Carbon Credit Data Quality. This guide equips you with the knowledge and tools to: ✅Build a data package - Learn where and how to gather all of the available data about a credit’s expected and verified climate performance. ✅Test the strength of the data package - Three tools will help you to evaluate whether the information in the data package is high-quality. ✅Keep the data fresh - Stay up to date as the market continues to iterate and improve data standards. Attention to those who work in the carbon space --> Integrity Action is holding focus groups and we need YOU! Why? 🙋♀️ We are bringing our 'citizen-centred accountability' model to carbon projects. 🌳 We *think* our new project will be a game-changer for carbon markets. 📢 It gives indigenous people and local communities an active voice in carbon projects, to fight corruption, ensure fairness/transparency of benefit-sharing mechanisms, and improve the integrity of carbon credits - a win-win for IPLCs, project developers & buyers. 🌍We've been very lucky to have support from Climate Collective and GPSA to make our idea a reality (thanks Alison Filler, Ana Velástegui, Anna Lerner Nesbitt, Saad Filali Meknassi Ann-Sofie Jespersen etc for all of your support thus far) BUT before launching the pilot, we want to validate our assumptions further... We are looking for local organisations and individuals in the Global Majority who work in or around carbon projects, as well as research bodies and other stakeholders working in VCMs who are interested in high integrity carbon and can act as critical friends. 🤳 Can you help us shape our tool? 💡 Can you join us in exploring the role citizens can play in the integrity of carbon markets? If you are interested in participating, please reach out for further information 📜🤝🤳✔ #accountability #transparency #citizenengagement #carbonintegrity #CCP #corecarbonprinciples #citizenengagement #integrityaction #carbonmarketcorruption #greenaccountability #VCM #collaboration
