As care partners, we may sometimes unintentionally hinder a person’s confidence and autonomy by doing things for them—forcing the person into a state of learned helplessness. On the flip side, we hold incredible power to uplift individuals by fostering their independence through using their unique capabilities. "Our job as care partners should be to enable a person with dementia to do as much for themselves and others as possible. You start to see persons with dementia in residential settings who are now able to decide themselves where to go for outings, what they want for a menu, what they want for activities. Get ready for a family gathering on Independence Day, or engage a patriotic individual you care for! Here's an activity idea that encourages social interaction and motor skill practice. Support independence and success for participants by using a template and cues. Invite participants to gather and create the materials for this activity (for themselves or for others), creating opportunities for them to have meaningful roles. During our May workshop, we had the pleasure of welcoming Ecumen teammates from the North Branch, Detroit Lakes, and Pathstone communities; each of which are Bronze Level certified in the Montessori Inspired Lifestyle®. Our trainers have been blown away by their ability to champion leaders in every department—nursing, environmental, culinary, etc.—to engage residents in a way that is above and beyond. Bronze level communities like these have trained staff in all departments on the use of Montessori principles. Residents living in bronze communities have opportunities to volunteer for purposeful roles, participate in resident committees, and have a choice in dining, activities, and daily schedules. Each has environmental features in place that make the community more accessible and engaging for residents, and staff use multidisciplinary learning circles to understand and address responsive behaviors common in dementia. Additionally, these communities have established credentialed internal trainers to sustain Montessori practices. 💜 We are filled with joy after the incredible day we spent at the very first Montessori Minds Meetup last week! 💜 We were inspired and energized by our fellow Montessorians’ presence at this inaugural workshop hosted in Cleveland.  These passionate leaders are part of a social movement to create positive change in the senior living industry. We learned just as much from them as they did from us. We asked our attendees “Did you enjoy doing this?
