The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is an independent, bipartisan, nonprofit organization that develops strong, pragmatic, and principled national security and defense policies. CNAS engages policymakers, experts, and the public with innovative, fact-based research, ideas, and analysis to shape and elevate the national security debate. A key part of our mission is to inform and prepare the national security leaders of today and tomorrow. CNAS is located in Washington and was established in 2007 by co-founders Dr. Kurt M. Campbell and Michèle A. Flournoy. Since the Center’s founding, our work has informed key U.S. strategic choices and has been acted on by Republican and Democratic leaders in the executive branch and on Capitol Hill.

Meet the CNAS Defense Team! The Defense Program evaluates military challenges and develops policy recommendations encompassing defense strategy, structure, operations, and resourcing to strengthen the security of the U.S. and its allies and partners. Their current research includes nuclear deterrence, drones, and the need for the U.S. to advance its capabilities to meet global threats and challenges. The Defense team also houses the CNAS Gaming Lab, which develops and runs innovative unclassified games and exercises on a range of challenging national security issues. Elizabeth holds the position of Visiting Associate Fellow with the CNAS Transatlantic Security Program. A former Senior Advisor to Canada’s Foreign Minister, she brings her knowledge of authoritarian governments’ use of modern warfare tactics, with a focus on influence operations, and how to better safeguard against such attacks, to further strengthen the research team. Convened in October 2023, the CNAS Defense Tech Task Force sought to address how the Department of Defense can best deliver relevant, urgent capabilities to U.S. warfighters at speed and scale from traditional and nontraditional sources using existing authorities, policies, and procedures.
