Happy #DownSyndromeAwarenessMonth! We kicked off the month on Sunday at the Capital Region Buddy Walk. It was a wonderful day as the community came together to celebrate individuals with Down syndrome, promote inclusion, and to raise money for the Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center. We surpassed our $50,000 goal!! Thank you to our committee, sponsors, teams and supporters for making the walk a success 💙💛 #educate #advocate #celebrate #abilitynotdisability #downsyndrome #capitalregion

Where people get better at life.
About us
The Center for Disability Services offers hope, innovation and achievement to the people we support. For over 80 years, we have been one of upstate New York’s largest providers of programs and services for individuals who have disabilities. Many of the innovative programs and vital services that we offer are not available elsewhere. The Center for Disability Services provides comprehensive Health Care, residential services, education, adult programming, service coordination and skilled nursing care to individuals with disabilities. In addition, we have a commercial printing, inserting, and mailing operation that is supported by a workforce of over 200 individuals with disabilities. Our annual budget is approximately $129 million dollars and we employ over 2,700 workers in over 80 locations. The Center also has a Foundation that supports many of the necessary services that are not funded by other sources.

Those who know me know that I stand out; I literally hit my head on doorways! 🤦🏻 BUT..... I'm dwarfed by my incredible daughter and all her amazing talents and abilities. Yes, she has #downsyndrome but it's given her an extra chromosome and she wields it like a superhero!! Her success in life can be attributed to many things (girl works her tail off 💪🏼) but programs like the Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center through Center for Disability Services have been crucial for us and so many others in the Capital Region. Please consider donating to the 28th Annual Capital Region Buddy Walk to keep these resources going. To support our team, you can donate under my name or our team name, Everly's Entourage. Link is 👇🏼

Celebrating the 34th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, referred to as the ADA, which expanded upon the first major piece of civil rights protection for people with disabilities, which was the 1973 Rehabilitation Act. It required all federally funded entities such as schools, hospitals and government buildings to be fully accessible. The ADA expanded on the 1973 Rehabilitation Act to include private entities available to the public including, but not limited to, stores, libraries and community centers. Since the ADA was passed, facilities are now designed with flat or ramp entrances. Sidewalks have curb cut-outs and ramps; buses, trains and other modes of transportation are accessible to those with mobility, hearing and vision impairments. For those with hearing impairments, closed captioning is widely available for TV shows and movies. In addition, public facilities are required to offer sign language interpretation or other forms of communication. For those with visual impairments, braille is required on signs in shared public spaces such as restrooms, classrooms and conference rooms. This meant new opportunities and experiences for people with disabilities and therefore more chances for independence to lead their lives the way they choose and are able. Brought to you by Michelle Miller, Practice Operations Manager and DEI Committee Member, Center for Disability Services.
