Can discrimination in the workforce be well-meaning? In a CEGA-supported study in Bangladesh, Nina Buchmann, Carl Meyer, and Colin Sullivan examined 'paternalistic discrimination,' in which employers preferred to hire men to protect women from dangerous or unpleasant tasks, despite women's willingness to engage in the work. They discuss this work in a new #CEGABlog and offer policy recommendations for increasing women's labor participation. https://lnkd.in/er8Garrr

In a new partnership with Pharo Foundation, CEGA will invest $100,000 to generate rigorous evidence about critical issues in the Horn of Africa. CEGA will competitively award grants through its Development Economics Challenge to projects focusing on early childhood education, water and sanitation, and employment in Somaliland, Ethiopia, Rwanda, or Kenya, with generous support from Pharo Foundation. The Development Economics Challenge was founded in 2016 as a research competition for PhD students at UC Berkeley to enable junior researchers to design and implement field studies. It has become a tool for seeding rigorous research in under-studied areas critical to improving the lives of those living in poverty. The Challenge incentivizes early-career researchers to consider the policy implications of their findings, allowing the visions of CEGA and Pharo Foundation to meet. Through its work, Pharo Foundation focuses on three main missions, including access to quality and affordable education, safe water, and eliminating barriers to productivity. Our first round of grantees will be chosen this fall. Learn more about this exciting new collaboration: https://lnkd.in/ey6_v-62

🆕Applying insights from psychology to help farmers plan and save for the future Seasonal hunger is a pernicious reality across low- and middle-income countries, especially those with large agricultural sectors. Periods of scarcity between harvests, known as the “hungry season,” have well-documented negative impacts on wellbeing, child development and economic outcomes In their recent study, Supreet Kaur (University of California, Berkeley), Kelsey Jack (Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA)), Ned Augenblick (University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business), Felix Masiye (The University Of Zambia (UNZA)), and Nicholas Swanson (Stanford King Center on Global Development) explore one avenue for dealing with this annual challenge of seasonal hunger. They apply insights from psychology and behavioural economics to help people use past experiences to inform future planning. Read their article here to learn more about their intervention and findings ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/eB8dr9cA
