Exciting news for CIDRAP and UMN SPH!
I am immensely pleased to announce that the University of Minnesota has established the Michael T. Osterholm Endowed Chair in Infectious Disease Research and Policy at our school. Dr. Osterholm has been an SPH faculty member for 23 years, and this chair recognizes his lifelong dedication to applied public health, infectious disease research, and improving the lives of people all over the world. Generous gifts from philanthropist Christy Walton; the Alumbra Innovations Foundation; and more than 1,000 individual donors provided funding for the chair’s endowment. Congratulations, Mike, on this singular and lasting honor! As a renowned infectious disease expert, Dr. Osterholm guided people across the U.S. through the COVID-19 pandemic with his straight talk about the virus, becoming nearly a household name in the process. Although the pandemic was the most well-known and globally dangerous of the disease outbreaks that he has tackled throughout his long career, Dr. Osterholm’s research and public health action on H5N1 (avian flu), Ebola, MERS, and H1N1 influenza had already brought him widespread international respect — he is the only UMN faculty member to have been inducted to both the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and the Council on Foreign Relations. Dr. Osterholm will not hold the chair and will continue as an SPH faculty member and UMN Regents Professor; the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP); a professor in the UMN Technological Leadership Institute in the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering; and an adjunct professor in the University of Minnesota Medical School. https://lnkd.in/gUU-AMzh University of Minnesota School of Public Health

A 2022 study found that antibacterial resistance was responsible for 1.27 million deaths in 2019, mostly in lower-income countries. The emergence of the seven drug-resistant bacteria, such as 𝘔𝘺𝘤𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘵𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘴 and 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴, each led to at least 80,000 deaths. We must act now to combat this silent pandemic.
