About us
The Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that protects and promotes human rights in the Americas through the strategic use of the tools offered by international human rights law. CEJIL offers advice and free legal representation to victims of human rights abuses—and to organizations that defend their causes—when justice proves impossible to achieve in their own countries. In this effort, CEJIL prioritizes the hemisphere’s most persecuted and excluded populations. Central to CEJIL’s work is the role of the victims and our collaboration with human rights defenders and partner organizations, with whom we litigate, coordinate our efforts and share our achievements.

🟠 What happens when online threats turn into real-world risks for #HumanRights defenders? Meta’s Oversight Board has announced a new case addressing the risks faced by #HumanRights defenders in #Peru, focusing on how platforms like Meta handle veiled or implicit threats in content. 🟠The Case: In July 2024, CEJIL reported to Meta a Facebook post in which a user in Peru posted a digitally altered image of a human rights defender with a caption accusing NGOs of wrongdoing and inciting violence. This content, shared during citizen protests against the government, highlights concerns about social media targeting activists. 🟠Why does it matter? This case represents an opportunity to examine how Meta enforces policies that aim to protect human rights defenders, particularly when threats of violence are veiled or implicit, require additional context to interpret, or occur within an environment of intimidation and harassment. The Board is inviting people and organizations to submit public comments regarding this case, closing at 23.59 Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Tuesday 28 January. 🔗Get Involved and join the conversation:

In memory of Jonathan Eoloff 🟠 At CEJIL, we honor the extraordinary legacy of Jonathan Eoloff, a passionate advocate who dedicated his life to promoting #justice, #peace, and dignity for communities around the world. On the occasion of his birth anniversary, we reflect on Jonathan's mission to ensure #HumanRights for those who suffer the most from the consequences of injustice. His work took him across borders, from supporting Mayan communities and vulnerable children in Guatemala and Mexico to documenting the stories of displaced communities in and outside Colombia, and fighting to secure protections for LGBTQ+ asylum-seekers and other immigrants in the United States. Support his fund for human rights defenders👉bit.ly/FundHRDefenders
