  •   #CalVEX: From March to August 2022, we conducted in-depth interviews with 31 service providers serving foreign-born communities in California. Providers report serious histories of trauma among foreign-born entrants, prior to their entry into the U.S., in the points of origin, in the migratory process, and upon arrival and resettlement in the U.S. https://lnkd.in/gNF9kgcF Many of the forms of abuse reported by interviewees among their clients qualify individuals for victim-based forms of immigration-related relief in the U.S., however, awareness of available relief is key and long delays in access to protections is concerning. Further, given the level of abuses many new entrants to the U.S. face, providers will need to prioritize trauma-informed care. American University Washington College of Law Newcomb Institute

  • 📣📑📚📊💡 Just launched in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health Journal, Volume 8, Issue 7, July 2024: "Intersectionality, gender norms, and young adolescents in context: a review of longitudinal multicountry research programmes to shape future action" by authors Prerna Banati, Nicola Jones, Caroline Moreau, Kristin Mmari, Anna Kågesten, Karen Austrian, and GEH Co-Director Rebecka Lundgren. Adolescents’ perceptions about gender norms vary by context, depend on individual opinion, and are shaped by socioecological drivers of gender inequalities in health. Shifting those perceptions is therefore challenging. The authors argue for the importance of applying an intersectionality lens to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for young adolescents and conclude with five practical recommendations for programme design and research. 👉 Read full article: https://lnkd.in/gH4gVb2k

  • ⚡💡 Our team recently came together for a powerful retreat session focused on exploring our individual values, inspirations, and how they connect to the mission of the Center on Gender Equity and Health (GEH). Through small group discussions, we got to know each other on a deeper level by sharing fun facts about ourselves and the "whys" that drive our work. The plenary discussion revealed the diverse reasons that brought us to GEH - from practical considerations like location, to profound values-based motivations like a passion for gender equity, violence prevention, and continuous learning. What united us was a shared commitment to meaningful work that improves lives, particularly for women and girls globally. As we reflected on what brings us joy in this work, common themes emerged: 🔍 Collaborating with local and global partners 🔍 Mentoring and bidirectional learning 🔍 Advancing research to promote equity and health 🔍 Being part of a mission-driven, supportive team The values that shape how we approach our work and partnerships are complementary, including: 🔍 Equalizing voices and creative thinking 🔍 Transparency, honesty, and accountability 🔍 Respect, cultural humility, and empathy 🔍 Teamwork, clear communication, and collaboration This session reinvigorated our sense of identity, community, and shared purpose at GEH. We are the collective sum of our diverse backgrounds, identities, and values - united in our commitment to gender equity and health through rigorous research grounded in the needs of communities. Rebecka Lundgren Katherine Hay Lotus McDougal Kathryn M.
