Thank you to Meir Rinde for the incredibly thorough and thoughtful reporting on the conversation I was fortunate to have with Jody Holton, Richard Lazer, and Kelley Yemen earlier this week. There's a lot to navigate (pun intended?) when it comes to the topic of maximizing mobility to and through Center City, and this piece does a fantastic job framing out the very real challenges we face, what we're learning from new travel data, and what excellent work is being done behind the scenes and along our roads and rails everyday to make progress. To quote Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), we're getting there! And with ongoing partnership - and stable and reliable funding for mass transit - we can get there better and faster. While there's much exciting work underway focused on pedestrians, bikes, and motor vehicles, the most pressing challenge we face is securing appropriate funding from Harrisburg in the coming weeks (if not days). As Jody pointed out on Wednesday, SEPTA carries more people everyday than both I-76 and I-95 combined. Transit is neither a nice-to-have luxury nor governmental welfare; it is what enables our downtown, city, and region to fire on all the cylinders that it does. At Center City District we understand that both the downtown we have and the even livelier one we're working toward will live or die based on SEPTA being enabled to maintain and restore service, to say nothing of its many exciting (and very real!) capital improvement projects in the pipeline.
Despite dire funding crisis, SEPTA’s working to attract more riders

Center City District hosted a "Mobility Matters" discussion about boosting multimodal travel - transit, walking and cycling, in addition to motor vehicles - as an economic development strategy. Regarding transit, some of the business owners wanted to know how they can help. Jody Holton, SEPTA’s chief planning and strategy officer responded: post on LinkedIn and other social media “that you use the system,” Holton suggested. “I think those things are tremendously powerful....It’s important that we talk about using the system and how SEPTA is a part of the region.” C: City of Philadelphia
