During Financial Literacy Month, Central City Neighborhood Partners (CCNP) hosted a series of financial literacy workshops for the communities we serve. These sessions covered vital topics such as saving for emergencies, budgeting, managing debt and credit, and preparing financially for disasters.
I had the honor of leading some of these workshops in Spanish, including one on "Preparing Financially for Natural Disasters." In today’s world, where natural disasters are becoming more frequent and severe, preparation is key.
In the past month alone, California has experienced numerous minor earthquakes, mostly ranging from magnitudes 1.5 to 2.5. While these quakes are often too small to be felt, they serve as reminders of the ever-present risk of larger events. On August 6, 2024, a 2.4 magnitude earthquake occurred near Castro Valley, and on July 28, 2024, a 3.3 magnitude quake struck near Suisun in the San Francisco Bay Area. Just yesterday, August 12, 2024, we experienced a 4.4 magnitude earthquake near South Pasadena. This quake felt stronger than 4.4 to me, as I live close to the epicenter.
As a financial educator, my role extends beyond helping individuals understand the basics of saving, budgeting, and building credit. It's about empowering our community to be prepared for any unexpected emergencies, including natural disasters. Natural disasters can strike at any time, leaving lasting impacts on our lives, communities, and finances. I challenge you to take action and help underserved communities—who are particularly vulnerable during natural disasters—by following a 30-Day Emergency Plan. Let’s also challenge ourselves to be prepared and make a difference. Stay tuned for weeks 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the plans.
