It was an honor for our team to spend a morning with Maggie Inouye, granddaughter of Senator Daniel K. Inouye and talented storyteller. Maggie created a beautiful video for her 9th grade Modern History of Hawaii class about Hawaii’s Nisei veterans--outlining their story following World War II and how a group of Nisei veterans were instrumental in CPB's creation. In doing so, she also honored her grandfather’s legacy as a member of the 442nd regiment, as well as one of CPB’s valiant founders. Member FDIC

Kumu Hula and Executive Director of the PAʻI Foundation, Victoria “Vicky” Holt Takamine, was awarded the 31st Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize at a celebration on December 15, 2024 at Washington Place. CPB is proud to support extraordinary individuals like Kumu Vicky who are making a remarkable impact through the arts. Kumu Vicky is the first recipient from Hawaii to receive the prize that is awarded annually to an individual who has “made an outstanding contribution to the beauty of the world and to mankind's enjoyment and understanding of life.” Terrance McKnight, New York Public Radio Host, author, and pianist, who chaired the selection committee for the award said, “The recipient of the Gish Prize needs to be both a creator and an instigator—someone who has enhanced beauty in the world and worked to make society more whole, someone who is highly accomplished and yet remains an agent of change. This year, the selection committee rose to the challenge by lifting its eyes across the horizon and unanimously choosing Vicky Holt Takamine. It is an honor to present the Gish Prize to her, helping to bring her contributions to culture the recognition it so richly deserves.” Member FDIC
