Inspiring and transforming communities by addressing essential human, cultural and community needs.

About us

Fifty years ago, civil rights leader Cesar Chavez ignited a movement that would transform communities by championing the rights of farmworkers, Latinos, and working families. He believed it was important to support them through numerous programs, including the burial program, credit union, and cooperative gas stations. Today, the Cesar Chavez Foundation (CCF) carries on Cesar's legacy of uplifting the lives of Latinos and working families by inspiring and transforming communities through social enterprises that address essential human, cultural and community needs. CCF serves hundreds of thousands of individuals through affordable housing development, education, broadcast programming, and the National Chavez Center. With more than 600 employees across six states, CCF provides vital community services while remaining sustainable, strategic, and fiscally responsible

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are recognizing the origins of the Cesar Chavez Foundation's funds and how they honor the enduring legacy of Cesar Chavez. This week, we highlight the National Chavez Center. 🌄 The National Chavez Center honors Cesar by annually coordinating and participating in hundreds of events, programs, and celebrations that inspire, educate, and encourage change. They include national days of service, youth heritage summits, a Speakers Bureau, and the Cesar Chavez Legacy Awards. ☀️The National Chavez Center also preserves and manages historic properties at its "Forty Acres" property near Delano and at the National Chavez Center on 187 acres where Cesar lived and labored his last quarter-century and where he and his wife, Helen Chavez, are buried. 🏘️ Cesar also built a community in Keene, which he named La Paz, where the 200-plus staff who lived there at any one time could live out principles such as nonviolence, self-sacrifice, and service to others. La Paz became a spiritual harbor for Cesar and others. 📍 On a portion of the Keene grounds, the National Chavez Center partners with the National Park Service in administering the César E. Chávez National Monument, the 398th unit of the Park Service and the first recognizing a modern-day Latino figure. #CesarChavezFoundation #SiSePuede #HispanicHeritageMonth

Today is World Homeless Day, which aims to raise awareness of the needs of people currently experiencing homelessness. Cesar Chavez once said that migrant farmworkers are among the original homeless people. He and his family endured miserable farm labor camps and often slept under bridges or trees by roadsides while following California's migrant trails in the late 1930s and early '40s. Cesar made affordable housing for people experiencing poverty a mission of the National Farm Workers Service Center Inc., now the Cesar Chavez Foundation. Over the years, the Chavez Foundation has built, renovated, and managed more than $900 million of high-quality, affordable housing at over three dozen communities serving more than 5,000 low-income families, veterans, and seniors throughout the southwest, most with extensive social services. 📸: Paul Sakuma #CesarChavezFoundation #SiSePuede

We sadly learned about the passing of Ethel Kennedy, widow of Senator Robert F. Kennedy. In December 1970, she endured a gauntlet of verbal and physical abuse from Anglo townspeople while walking into the Monterey County Jail in Salinas to visit Cesar Chavez after he was imprisoned for disobeying a rural judge’s injunction banning a United Farm Workers’ boycott of a huge lettuce grower. In August 1988, in Delano, she helped Cesar break his 36-day fast over the pesticide poisoning of farm workers and their children. Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights 📸 by Victor Aleman

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, I’m reflecting on my favorite quote from César Chávez: “We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community... Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.” César Chávez dedicated his life to fighting for the rights and dignity of farmworkers, organizing with relentless passion to secure better wages, working conditions, and protections for those who had long been marginalized. His leadership in the labor movement and co-founding of the United Farm Workers (UFW) sparked a national conversation on fairness and justice. Chávez’s work transcended the labor movement—it was a call to action for all communities to unite in the pursuit of equity and progress for everyone. As we celebrate the achievements and contributions of the Hispanic community this month, let’s be inspired by Chávez’s legacy of selfless ambition. Let’s work to uplift and support one another, ensuring that equity, opportunity, and shared prosperity remain at the forefront of all that we do. #HispanicHeritageMonth #Community #Equity #Inclusion #CesarChavez #LaborRights #JusticeForAll

Yesterday morning we welcomed a group of students from California State University, Bakersfield for the 2nd day of the Chavez / Huerta Leadership Conference that featured tours of the National Chavez Center and excellent conference panel sessions. It was the first time most of the students had visited the monument. NCC is preserving a huge part of Kern County history. This year, there are 36.2 million Latinos eligible to vote, as reported by the Pew Research Center. Together, we can significantly impact the upcoming election—if we take action and ensure our voices are heard. Cesar Chavez emphasized the critical role of participation. Today, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, former senior advisor to the President of the United States and granddaughter of Cesar Chavez, echoes this sentiment. She reminds us that his wisdom remains relevant, as our votes serve as a powerful instrument to influence decisions that impact our communities, the environment, and many more vital issues on this year’s ballot. The future is in your hands. Create a voting plan and stand up for what you believe in! Let’s come together and make our voices count!
