The 2024 budget is next week, and Rachel Reeves is expected to announce more public investment. In this commentary, Daisy Jameson argues that this investment is welcome, particularly if used to address the gap in investment required for the UK in its transition to a clean economy. She also sets out how the investment could be funded by changing the fiscal rules by excluding the policy banks from the UK’s debt rule.

Many thanks to all those who joined us for our first annual CETEx conference hosted alongside Sustainable Macro and the Deutsche Bundesbank. Presenters from across academia, central banking, and civil society presented cutting-edge research across four themes: 1) Renewable energy supply chains; 2) Climate policy and financial markets; 3) Climate scenarios and macro modelling; and 4) Nature loss and impacts on the transition. We then closed with a policy panel on the geopolitics of energy supply chains in the transition with Peter Olive, Daniela Gabor, and Claudio Baccianti – moderated by Agnieszka (Aga) Smoleńska, PhD. Special thanks to our keynote speaker, Luiz Awazu Pereira da Silva, who we are delighted to welcome to our team as a visiting Professor in Practice.

New policy brief outlines options to minimise the fiscal burden of the Bank of England’s Asset Purchase Facility and proposes that some of the savings from this could be used for much-needed green investment projects - that are vital to creating jobs and facilitating the UK’s net zero transition. https://lnkd.in/eVHikV-W

The economic transformation required to reach global net zero goals relies on the mining and transformation of certain minerals and metals for the production of low-carbon technologies. With rising demand for these critical minerals and uneven distribution, the EU faces supply risks and economic security challenges. Our new report explores the issues, and the policy responses needed for a way forward. You can read the main messages and download the full report on our site. On October 14-15 we are hosting a conference with Sustainable Macro and Deutsche Bundesbank on Net zero, nature and supply chain vulnerabilities. The conference will focus on the macrofinancial and environmental implications of the growth of net zero transition-related supply chains, and address the different dimensions of how nature loss and climate change disrupt global supply chains and thereby generate macrofinancial instability. Further details can be found on our website. ⬇
