CFBAA Presidents Corner
October 2024
I have never been up in a hot air balloon, but this past week the lovely Ms. D and I ventured out to Albuquerque for the annual Balloon Festival and to connect with our grandkids. Not being a balloonist, I knew not what to expect so went into the experience with low expectations. Was I wrong! It was amazing and truly fascinating watching balloonists from all over the world gather to share their passion. I love all things aviation and now wonder why I never ventured up in one of the original aero machines but is now on my bucket list. I highly recommend you attend and be witness to over 700 balloons of every shape and size, ascending into the morning skies over New Mexico! They also have competitions for bean bag tossing, which I still am unable to figure out how they manage to fly them on a course.
Back in June the CFBAA Board of Directors thought it would be a good idea to host a small, members only, golf outing to explore the possibility of a funding source for scholarships and other operational expenses. Three of us met with the pros at Eagle Creek, liked what we saw, and decided to move forward expecting maybe a few dozen golfers to join us for a day on the links. Little did some of us know that over 100 golfers would sign up and all, but 4 holes, would have sponsors! Everyone I spoke with truly enjoyed the day, and a couple of friends that run outings praised the event, saying it was one of the best they have played. Kudus to Matthew Olfason for his hard work in pulling it together!
The airlines have slowed, or stopped, hiring for the year, Spirit looks like they will enter bankruptcy, Boeing is in shambles, but business aviation continues strong. Business aviation continues strong, though worldwide is down only 4% from last year, but given certain world events is pretty good. While the future is hard to predict, it appears our industry will continue thriving with exciting opportunities on the horizon. Urban Air Mobility, environmentally friendly fuels, introduction of “guided visual approaches”, and a new focus on equipping flight department managers to be better leaders are all on the board for next year. Buckle up, sit up straight, and hold on because Business Aviation is moving forward fast, soaring with adventure, and providing exciting opportunities. Don’t miss it!
Blue Skies,
Dave
