I was honored to be a panelist at the CFMA - Valley of the Sun Chapter Suicide Prevention Committee event on September 11, 2024. The insightful discussion underscored the heroism of construction workers in the eyes of their loved ones and the community, It was a powerful reminder that each individual in the industry carries a leadership role. The event advocated for the establishment of mental health support programs in every workplace. Thank you to CFMA for shedding light on this critical issue. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Construction Hike for Hope was an absolute success! The inaugural Hike for Hope, which was held on April 20th at Papago Park brought over 60 hikers, numerous sponsors, and various support/crisis organizations together to promote awareness of mental health and suicide prevention. Although this was promoted as a “construction” hike, there were many non-contractor hikers, as this is an issue that impacts many well beyond just our industry! In the end, there were over $14,000 in donations! Stay tuned, as this annual event has only just begun . . . see everyone in 2025! A fantastic evening was had by all at the 22nd Annual CFMA Executive of the Year Banquet at the Arizona Biltmore Resort. 184 guests enjoyed an evening in the historic Gold Room where four Arizona industry leaders were honored. John Murdough, of Baker Tilly US Tilley, was honored with the Wink Ames Memorial Pioneer of the Year award with an amazing video tribute honoring his thirty-five years of impact in the construction industry. Mike Hansberger, of Caliente Construction Inc., was awarded the Best Under the Sun General Member of the Year and Brian Wilder, MBA, of Lovitt & Touché, A Marsh & McLennan Agency LLC Company was awarded the Best Under the Sun Associate Member of the Year. Our other award winners included Mike Godbehere, of GCON Inc., with the General Contractor Executive of the Year, Ken Kortman, of Kortman: Energy Driven Solutions., with the Subcontractor Executive of the Year, and Rudy Garcia Jr., of RG & Sons Plumbing Inc., with the Emerging Leader of the Year. Each winner was honored with the award and thanked both the people in their companies and CFMA for the impact the association has had. Ken Kortman, President of Kortman: Energy Driven Solutions, is this year’s Subcontractor Executive of the Year. Ken has embodied quality leadership since assuming the presidency from his father and Kortman Inc.’s founder, Roger Kortman, 24 years ago. Today, Kortman Inc. has seen tremendous growth in its expansion of services to its clients, primarily through electrical construction, intelligent building technologies, and a 24/7 service division. Ken served on the Board of Directors at the Arizona Builders Alliance for ten-plus years and was chairman of the board in 2017. Ken serves as a national representative at the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) conventions. He also supports other community initiatives and pursues his passion of serving by being involved with: Elevate Phoenix, Urban Youth Excel, Pella Church, Sky Harbor Coalition, and Phoenix Aero Club.
