Lots to dig into with this new report, but what do you think about this part: "Notably, a much greater share of older adults are self-employed than younger workers. The percentage of self-employed adults 65 and older (24.2%) is nearly triple the share of self-employed workers 25 to 39 (8.1%) and more than double that of workers 40 to 54 (11.7%)." Other research supports the idea that older adults are successful entrepreneurs (https://lnkd.in/dKbC-W8t) and it makes intuitive sense that older adults are ready to start businesses after years of experience. However, this could also be a necessary artifact of age discrimination and inability to get hired. #older #workforce #entrepreneurs #ageism https://lnkd.in/gakjt5zN

"Older adults are less likely to share their #LGBTQ+ identities with care providers than younger generations, and their silence can compromise physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being. But in a growing number of places like the Chicago residential center H.O.M.E, people such as retired social worker Brian Dennis can feel peace and belonging thanks to staff who learn to understand their diverse challenges and create inclusive, welcoming environments." #ageism #solutions #intersectionality https://lnkd.in/e3wqji3W

#MondayMotivation Let's start using and calling for realistic imagery of older adults - and include them when we represent #workplaces. "The images out there reflect and reinforce perceptions of older adults," Janine Vanderburg said. "The stale and overused imagery only reinforces negative stereotypes - like the wrinkled hand syndrome of a worried, lonely older adult looking out a window, hoping someone will come visit them. Or an older adult looking puzzled by technology. Imagery matters." Excited to hear about new solutions in the article from places like https://lnkd.in/dtt8PrB. Thanks to Jessica Hall for continued reporting on #ageism! #stockphoto #photography https://lnkd.in/gY_-zzdc

Calling all aging advocates! Ageism Awareness Day 2024 is October 9. As you know, ageism is harmful and prevalent. But we're making a difference together, just like we did in 2023 with video calls-to-action on "What Would a World Without Ageism" could look like. Those videos are available on our YouTube channel, and we can make good use of them again on Ageism Awareness Day. It's a chance to let the world know that we continue to be a growing force for an age-inclusive world. Post your video on October 9 and tag #AgeismAwarenessDay with your call to action to end ageism. https://lnkd.in/g-wsqbkx Ashton Applewhite Barbara Brooks Barbara Meltzer Beth Long-Higgins Betsey Werley Bibian Reyes, MSW Claudia Ferrera Chandra Matthews Christina Peoples, MS Debra Albert Diana Miller Diana Place Don Akchin Gary A.
