At Chapter One, we transform children’s futures with 1:1 reading support at the time they need it most. For over 30 years, Chapter One has been transforming children’s futures by providing one-to-one support to help them learn to read. Our nonprofit provides schools in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom with a sustainable, supplemental program that can scale to all kindergarten through second grade students. More than 200 incredible corporations and businesses have partnered with Chapter One to provide more than 5,000 online reading volunteers for our students. These volunteers connect with their students each week for a 30 minute, remote reading session. I started volunteering with Chapter One through AIG last fall. I was assigned to help a 1st grader improve her reading skills by meeting online for 30 minutes every week. Last week, I had the privilege of finally meeting her in person. I was invited to be the guest reader for her class, and I chose to read "Race to Kindness" by my friends' son, Orion Jean. I didn't know before I arrived that "kindness" was their value for the month. I gave the class a little background on Orion and the great things he is doing. The kids loved the book and asked so many questions. I asked them for examples of kind things that they can do. We had fun together. I gave a book to my student to take home and I left one for the classroom's library. Our tutoring sessions will end after next week, and I'm a little sad, because those sessions are sometimes the highlight of my week. Not only has my student's reading improved, but her joy for reading has increased too.
