In transportation, whether it’s a gas station or an electric vehicle (EV) charging station, location is key. Our choices are shaped by convenience and efficiency. Strategic placement serves not just the vehicle’s needs but the driver’s overall experience. Gas Stations: Convenience Drives Success For as long as we’ve been driving, gas stations have thrived by being along well-traveled routes. The ideal gas station is easy to access, allowing drivers to fuel up quickly and get back on the road without delay. Convenience matters most—drivers avoid out-of-the-way stations simply because of the added time. In fact, a study showed that 83% of drivers choose gas stations based on their location, prioritizing quick, easy stops over price or brand loyalty. It’s all about minimizing disruption. EV Charging Stations: A New Layer of Consideration EV charging comes with its own challenges. Unlike gas fill-ups that take a few minutes, charging requires a longer stop—anywhere from 20 minutes with a DC fast charger to several hours with a Level 2 charger. So, location plays an even bigger role. Drivers now want to know what’s around the charging station. Are there shops, cafés, or parks nearby? Locations offering engaging amenities are more attractive, turning charging stops into mini destinations. It’s no longer just about the vehicle—it’s about the driver too. Rethinking Location Strategy for EV Charging As EV adoption rises, we must rethink how we place charging stations. It’s not enough to stick them in parking lots or along highways. We need to create a more integrated experience for drivers. When EV drivers stop to charge, they’re making a time investment. By placing chargers near entertainment, food, and shopping, we transform the charging process into a more productive or relaxing break. Companies like Tesla are already doing this, placing Superchargers in areas where drivers can shop, dine, or even work while they wait. Supporting a Seamless EV Transition As more people shift to EVs, the placement of charging stations will determine how easily drivers can adopt this technology. Convenience will drive adoption. Those without home garages need accessible public chargers, and their choices will depend on location and the surrounding environment. According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), at least 380,000 public charging stations will be needed across the U.S. by 2030 to meet demand. Strategic placement is critical to making this expansion successful. Conclusion: A Better Future for EV Charging The future of EV infrastructure shouldn’t focus solely on charging speed. It should prioritize the driver’s experience, making charging stations more than just functional stops—they should be places drivers enjoy visiting. The right balance between convenience, experience, and location will drive adoption and improve the EV journey. In short, it’s not just about powering cars; it’s about powering better journeys.
