Thank you Tori Bedford GBH for interviewing us for this important story! Climate impacts are here - but there are things we can do to protect ourselves. “What once was a body of water is now the site of a road or a home,” said Emily Norton, executive director of the Charles River Watershed Association. “And as we have more precipitation, that’s where the water is coming back to.” “Right now, the government is not stepping up, whether it’s with updated flood maps or disclosure requirements. We’re not doing what should really be the low-hanging fruit of protecting people from flooding and climate change.” Full story here: https://lnkd.in/eeUtMjA3

On Monday, CRWA celebrated the Quinobequin during Indigenous Peoples Day Newton's ceremonial #IndigenousPeoplesDay celebration. Despite the rain, we enjoyed a meaningful day honoring the heritage, history, achievements, and resilience of Indigenous Peoples. We acknowledge that CRWA operates across the traditional territories of the Massachusett, Nipmuc, and Wampanoag #nations and recognize Indigenous peoples as our watershed's past, present, and future stewards. Thank you, IPD Newton for hosting such an incredible event, and Kari Percival for your help making fish hats! 👏

Kudos to the Commonwealth for mitigating flood risks! 👏 Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey announced over $13.9 million in grants to support the repair of dams and coastal infrastructure across MA. The funding will support two projects in the Charles River Watershed: $250,000 is dedicated to a Sanford Mill Pond Dam Alternatives Assessment in Medway, and $123,750 is dedicated to improving Red Dam in Wrentham 🌊

The devastation brought by Hurricane Helene highlights the urgency of the climate crisis. Between 1958 and 2022, heavy rainfall events in the northeastern United States increased by 60%. As our planet continues to warm, we are experiencing more intense storms in the northeast. Many dams designed for historical storm patterns may not withstand the increased rainfall we’re now facing. In the event of a significant storm, the risk of catastrophic dam breaches and subsequent downstream flooding becomes a serious concern. A recent DCReport article highlights CRWA’s advocacy for the removal of high-hazard dams across the watershed as climate risks continue to rise. 🔗 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/eaF5waw4

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us for such a memorable celebration on our beloved river. Your support makes our mission to protect, restore, and enhance the Charles River watershed possible.
