BREAKING NEWS! The world renowned University of Pittsburgh has announced that it will be commencing a brand new Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) program within its School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS), the first of its kind in a U.S. public university. “Major drivers of this program include an accumulation of scientific evidence showing that chiropractic care is a safe and effective approach to the treatment of pain and the important role it can play in mitigating opioid use for back and neck pain through nonopioid interventions,” said Dr Michael Schneider, a professor in SHRS and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Pitt, who will be the program’s acting director. “According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 619 million people live with low back pain. It is the leading cause of disability worldwide,” Dr Schneider added. “Opening a Doctor of Chiropractic education program in a research-intensive university is a bold and innovative step toward advancing health care education, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and improving patient outcomes,” said Dr Anthony Delitto, Dean of U.Pitt’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. This program will focus on evidence-based training for spine and musculoskeletal conditions and prepare students to work within interprofessional health care settings and private practice. “Our students will follow all public health initiatives and recommendations and will receive clinical training side-by-side in an integrated setting with physicians, physical therapists and other health care providers,” Dr Schneider said. Applications for prospective students will be accepted in fall 2024 with the first cohort of 40 students starting in fall 2025. Over the following two years, the program will grow to accept 60 students. The program has established a clinical affiliation with VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, whose growing chiropractic care program includes on-site services at the University Drive campus and multiple community-based outpatient clinics. The advancements of chiropractic over the past 40 years have been profound. In chiropractic school, many of us were taught chiropractic listings based on palpatory and x-ray findings. PLI…PRS, etc. Yet, we could look at the skeletal specimens in the anatomy lab and see that spinous processes were often bent and crooked. How could that be a reliable indication of what to adjust? High quality research indicates that the chiropractic subluxation could be better codified as a degenerative spectrum disorder that causes orthopedic/neurologic compromise due to and characterized by: — altered segmental motion, — discogenic and zygapophyseal joint degradation, — Modic changes, — Pfirrmann changes, — Czervionke periarticular edema, — paraspinal atrophy, — brain stem, cord and nerve root tethering, compression, — altered CSF flow, — elevated intracranial pressure, — dysautonomia, — CNS and PN neurodegeneration — etc. #Chiropractic care uniquely, safely and effectively addresses these issues to improve health, alleviate opiate/medication morbidity and reduce surgical interventions.
