WTTW/Chicago PBS Chicago Stories episode on the Union Stockyards highlights Mary McDowell's remarkable contributions as a social reformer in Back of the Yards (40-minute mark). Known as the “Angel of the Stockyards,” McDowell was a fierce advocate for improved sanitation, housing, and labor rights for immigrant and African American workers and women in the neighborhood and beyond. Her efforts, in partnership with Jane Addams and notable social reformers like Chicago Commons' founder Graham Taylor, also extended to public health and education reform. In the late 1960’s, McDowell's House (formerly the University of Chicago Settlement House) merged with Chicago Commons, marking her legacy in uplifting marginalized communities through environmental activism and labor advocacy.
