About us

Child Advocates mobilizes advocate volunteers to break the vicious cycle of child abuse. We speak up for abused children who are lost in the system and guide them into safe environments where they can thrive. A judge appoints Child Advocates to represent the best interests of a child or sibling group in foster care. They serve as the judge’s eyes and ears while the children are in custody, ensuring their unique needs are met until they can safely return home or are permanently placed with a loving relative or adoptive family. Unlike Child Protective Services caseworkers and court-appointed attorneys who juggle overwhelming caseloads, our volunteers represent just one child or sibling group at a time. Their advocacy makes sure no child falls through the cracks of our overburdened child welfare system. Child Advocates volunteers make a profound difference in the lives of the children they serve. Studies show children served by an advocate volunteer are better able to work with others and control deviant behavior than children without an advocate. Also, more parents of these children complete counseling services, psychiatric evaluations, and drug and alcohol counseling than those without an advocate. With Child Advocates’ help, we can break the cycle of child abuse and give more foster children a chance at a better, brighter future.

Meet Meghan Sankowski, our recent Volunteer of the Month! ⭐ She became an advocate in 2015 and has since worked on 16 cases and helped 23 children. Meghan is very invested in the children she’s assigned to and goes above and beyond to ensure that their needs are being met. We are so grateful to have Meghan as an advocate!

We love to see our children’s talents at work for good! One of our foster youth created this beautiful, original artwork for Texas CASA that will be used to lift up and encourage other foster youth in their journey. 🌼☀️ “I am capable of doing great things. I am strong. I can and I will. I am wonderful. I am unique. I am confident in my skills and gifts. I love and accept myself for who I am. I will never, ever give up. Everything I need is within me. I am healthy and I am wealthy. I am enough.”

A group of advocates just wrapped up a book study! 📚 They read “Troubled: A Memoir of Foster Care, Family, and Social Class” by Rob Henderson, which recounts growing up in foster care, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force and attending elite universities. A big thank you to Pam Lewis from Compassionate Houston and one of our advocates, Raymond Stubblefield, for leading this insightful book study!

Yesterday, we had a beautiful Summer Luncheon! 💐 We were joined by supporters, volunteers, friends, Harris County judges and CPS caseworkers. It was a hopeful morning sharing stories from our work and celebrating the individuals and community who are bringing our mission to life.

During advocate Mimi’s last visit with her child, 3-year-old Olivia* quoted this from one of her favorite books and gave Mimi a big hug. It’s sweet moments like these that show just how special an advocate can be for a child during their time in foster care. 🥰 Names were changed to protect the children involved.
