The 3,400-square-foot Child Life Zone is now open in the Children’s Tower! This therapeutic play space is dedicated to support the social and emotional wellbeing of the kiddos at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU. Thanks to our unmatched community, we raised $2.6 million—an anonymous donor contributed a lead gift of $2 million, and we also received $300,000 each from our unstoppable partners at Estes Express Lines and Meta! “The Child Life Zone opens a whole new world of possibilities for our team to care for kids – and for them to interact with each other – amid their medical journeys. We’re immensely grateful to the donors who made this amazing space possible,” said Bethany Fisackerly, child life manager at CHoR. Estes Express Lines delivered in a big way during their Spirit Week in September by stocking the mobile book carts at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU with hundreds of books for the kids. Over the last four years, the company’s philanthropic giving has supported CHoR’s vision for building the inpatient Children’s Tower and the meaningful resources offered inside. They also recently established a partnership with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. With over 90 years of experience, the Richmond-based freight company, Estes is in it for the long-haul with CHoR. While Estes employees stocked the carts, they also engaged in meaningful conversations with members of our CHoR team, expressing the undeniable impact CHoR has had on their team and our community. “As a family-focused company, we’re committed to supporting children’s health and finding new ways to bring that support to life, here in Richmond and throughout Estes’ network,” said Carrie Johnstone VP, customer experience and innovation. Partners like Estes who are unconditionally committed to understanding what our patients and families need allow us to nurture the champion in every child together. #ThankfulThursday

The 2024-25 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings were released today, and we’ve been named to the list for the 10th time! U.S. News & World Report gathered clinical data from more than 100 medical centers. This information, coupled with surveys of thousands of pediatric specialists, was used to award “best” designations to the hospitals that excelled at factors such as clinical outcomes, level and quality of hospital resources directly related to patient care, and expert opinions. Kirk with Knights of Columbus has spent over eight years volunteering at the burn unit in the Critical Care Hospital, inspired by a personal experience. His wife was also a pediatric nurse at VCU before her retirement, so unrelenting compassion comes naturally to this couple. Kirk advocated for Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU's child life program to receive funds from the Mechanicsville council and this generous donation from Knights of Columbus will truly make a difference for our patients and families. #ThankfulThursday

Earlier this week, our friends from Anthem’s leadership team stopped by for a visit. We showed them around the Children’s Tower and thanked them for being a 2024 Vision Partner. Josh Kugelman, Anthem BCBS Director of State and Local Government, and longtime Anthem LemonAid liaison with Children’s Hospital Foundation said “Anthem addresses health inequities across Virginia by creating strategic relationships with community partners that believe in the same health priorities as we do. We are proud to be a driving force in setting up hundreds of lemonade stands across Virginia for the past 24 years. And we appreciate the opportunity to support the hematology and oncology services at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU by making the lives of children facing cancer a little bit brighter.” Our sweet summertime tradition, Anthem LemonAid presented by Richmond Ford, raised over $219,000 for our nationally ranked hematology and oncology services. Having partners like Anthem who inspire us with their generosity, fills us with unrelenting hope for the kids at CHoR.

We kicked off Childhood Cancer Awareness month with Hyundai Hope On Wheels. Since 1998, Hyundai Hope On Wheels has made a commitment to help children fight cancer. Their unwavering dedication was put into high gear last week, as Dr. Elizabeth Krieger and the hematology/oncology team received the 2024 Hyundai Impact Award. This $100,000 grant supports Dr. Krieger’s research into a connection between immune response after a stem cell transplant and leukemia recurrence. Congratulations to the entire Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU team! #thankfulThursday
