We're so grateful for the medical residents in our IMPACT program, who do important work with our incredible community partners like Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House!
Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) is not just our next door neighbor, but our community partner. The IMPACT program embodies what it means to commit to providing true community care. The IMPACT program is designed for medical residents who are interested in gaining an in-depth and focused experience involving community-based intervention or policy work. This past week, we had first-year residents in the IMPACT program stop by for a Meal of Love. We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with CHLA in all divisions and their commitment to helping serve more families better. Thank you, IMPACT team and CHLA for your unwavering support 🏡❤️

At 18 months old, Luca was diagnosed with clear cell sarcoma, a rare kidney cancer that 30 years ago he would have been unlikely to survive. Today, a more powerful chemotherapy regimen has helped to erase the disease from his body and made his chances of defeating it not merely better, but probable. “This happens to you and you realize you have no choice,” his mother says. “You are their advocate. You have to get them through this thing.” https://bit.ly/3yVHYJX

Building new paradigm in radiation therapy planning: CHLA investigators and their collaborators at health tech Voxel Healthcare received a $2.1M grant from the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program to advance an AI-driven clinical decision support technology for brain radiation therapy. The technology uses machine learning to add next-level precision to radiation treatment plans that may help protect key substructures of the brain and improve long-term health outcomes after radiation. “Our goal is to empower clinicians to develop and evaluate radiation therapy plans for new patients with a level of information they’ve never had before,” says Arthur Olch, PhD Principal Investigator on the grant and Chief of Physics in the Radiation Oncology Program at CHLA. “It will transform their planning process.”

"We've got to build our pipeline of the nurses of the future," CHLA Chief Nursing Officer Kelly Johnson emphasized to the hospital's inaugural Pediatric Pathway nursing cohort. "You are our future." The Pediatric Pathway Program recruits students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with a demonstrated interest in the pediatric specialty and immerses them in a custom-built clinical practicum aligned to their academic studies. The two-year program gives students over 200 of their clinical hours at CHLA. The program will welcome its first eight students to the hospital this fall in partnership with Mount Saint Mary's.

What is gene therapy? The next generation of medicine seeks to pinpoint “faulty” genetic code within a person’s DNA to stop or slow disease at its source. At CHLA, we’re committed to accelerating next-generation gene therapy research and care while administering the latest leading-edge therapies to patients. CHLA is the only pediatric hospital in Southern California authorized to administer all seven gene therapies approved for children by the FDA. Learn more about gene therapy from Dr. Alan S.
