Building community and enhancing the quality of life for San Francisco residents

About us

The Mission of the Chinatown Community Development Center is to build community and enhance the quality of life for San Francisco residents. We are a place-based community development organization serving primarily the Chinatown neighborhood, and also serve other areas including North Beach and the Tenderloin. We are a community development organization with many roles - as neighborhood advocates, organizers and planners, and as developers and managers of affordable housing. We believe in a comprehensive vision of community, a quality environment, a healthy neighborhood economy, and active voluntary associations. We are committed to the empowerment of low-income residents, diversity and coalition building, and social and economic justice.

Thank you to Sherry Williams, long time, transformational leader of One TI (Treasure Island) for her 30 years of service to launch the vision of what Treasure Island could be for San Francisco. It takes a village, but every village needs a leader. Chinatown CDC is proud that we could support Swords to Plowshares who have played a core role on the vision of TI by developing and operating housing for veterans coming out of homelessness. Earlier this year, Chinatown CDC and Swords completed development of Maceo May, TI's first new construction vet housing project. Sherry, we hope we have made you proud.

"Offering no excuses for missteps, intentional or not, I encourage the Bay Area community to stand firmly behind the Dream Keeper Initiative’s work, and the often heroic efforts of Black- and people of color-led organizations. Their on-the-ground impact is essential for the wellbeing of our entire region."

  • 🎉 Thank you for making Chinatown CDC's 47th Annual Gala, "Our Village, Our Heartbeat," a tremendous success on September 6th! Over 700 supporters and guests filled the Fairmont San Francisco to join us in this meaningful celebration. Together, we celebrated the heart and soul of Chinatown — the residential village of seniors, families, and immigrants who make our Chinatown a living and breathing vibrant community. Since its founding in 1977, Chinatown CDC has championed affordable housing, safety, and economic development, culminating in the landmark 1986 Chinatown Master Plan. These values continue to make our village a shining model for Chinatowns nationwide, and your support has played a significant role in this achievement. Congratulations to our honorees, each of whom has made a unique and invaluable contribution to our community. The Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr. (Lifetime Achievement Award), the 2024 Iftar Planning Committee (Allan E. Low Super Partner Award), and Hanmin Liu and Jennifer Mei of Wildflowers Institute (Community Angel Award). Another highlight was the Fund-A-Need, raising over $68,000 to restore the Green and Community Spaces, directly benefiting residents across three Chinatown CDC affordable housing properties. Thank you, every one of you, for being part of this incredible evening! Your presence and support made the 47th Annual Gala a resounding success. When people and places don't control their own narratives, the "world" can tell that narrative for you and often in ways that don't reflect reality. For instance, I've always been skeptical of how developers and planners use the notion of "blighted" but occupied neighborhoods to justify "redevelopment." So in Chinatown, we want and are creating our own narrative. When the world heard reports of Chinatown "die-ing," that story came from us. Now, the world needs to know that Chinatown is being revived - but from inside out. As usual - our artists tell these stories in ways that touch the heart and soul - not just the head. If you want to know where SF Chinatown is heading - come join the Chinatown Media Arts Collaborative at Edge on the Square for this event on September 7!!!!
