Our Emmer is growing nicely. It has had hot humid days and cold days. It has seen rain more than it probably cares considering it is a more drought tolerant wheat. Through all of the summer’s unpredictable weather, it is growing just fine. Soon we will be able to cut, let it lay to cure, and then combine it. 🌾

Did you know? 🌾 Red Fife is an heirloom wheat with roots in Ukraine, brought to Canada in 1840 by a farmer named David Fife. Known for its genetic diversity and ability to thrive in tough conditions, Red Fife boasts a toasty, nutty flavor and a protein content of 13-15%. It’s perfect for breads, cookies, biscuits, and whole wheat pastries. 🍞

The millet is putting seeds on and growing just like we hoped! 🌱 We should be able to combine it in the near future. Millet has tiny seeds but it may be ground into flour or used as a whole seed. Millet is also used as a cover crop to produce surface mulch and reducing compaction of soil.

Farmers like ourselves love rye for its environmental benefits! This resilient grain improves soil health by preventing erosion, increasing organic matter, and reducing the need for fertilizers and herbicides.
