This year, we celebrated the resilience and hope within our sickle cell warriors and families. 💪 CHKD is committed to being a regional and national leader in treating children with sickle cell disease. I am currently in my last semester of nursing school at Virginia Peninsula Community College. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐬? The first thing I learned working in pediatrics is that you're not only caring for the child but also for their parents or guardians. Establishing strong, empathetic relationships with the entire family is crucial in providing holistic care for the child and ensuring their well-being. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐇𝐊𝐃? CHKD has been the most positive learning and working environment I have experienced so far. The supportive preceptors and leadership at CHKD have been instrumental in building my confidence and honing my nursing skills. The collaborative and supportive environment, as well as the continuous learning opportunities, have motivated me to continue my nursing journey at CHKD. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐇𝐊𝐃 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐨𝐰? The externship at CHKD provided me with invaluable hands-on experience and imperative insights into pediatric nursing, which have been incredibly beneficial as I work as a nursing care partner while completing my final semester of nursing school. The one-on-one guidance and mentorship from experienced preceptors during the externship allowed me to develop essential skills and knowledge in providing care to pediatric patients. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐇𝐊𝐃? If someone is interested in being an extern at CHKD, I highly encourage them to take the opportunity. The immersive experience, one-on-one preceptorship, and exposure to diverse pediatric patients during the externship have given me a clear understanding of my career goals and the type of nurse I aspire to be. The externship has solidified my passion for pediatric nursing, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone considering a career in this specialized field.

  • Congratulations to Dr. Crystal Proud, medical director of neurosciences at #CHKD, for receiving a surprise acknowledgment this week from Sarepta Therapeutics! Dr. Proud and her team have made extraordinary contributions to the Elevidys clinical trial program for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disorder that mostly affects boys and causes progressive muscle weakness. Through their work, they’ve given hope to several CHKD patient families that their children who have DMD will live longer lives and keep their mobility. “Your work here has brought us closer to a future where Duchenne muscular dystrophy is no longer a life-limiting condition but a manageable one,” said Sara Taves Whitley of Sarepta Therapeutics. “We’re profoundly grateful for your leadership and vision.” Thank you, Dr. Proud, for bringing hope to our patient families! #Elevidys #GeneTherapy #Duchenne
