As Q3 ends and we review our goals, it's key to remember success isn't just about achievements—it’s about how we show up daily. Here's a message from Christian, encouraging us to focus on the legacy we leave and the impact we make.
Too often, we burn our energy on the wrong questions. Questions like: "What do I want?" "Where do I see myself in five years?" "How can I achieve my desired career success?" They're good questions, but they assume we know exactly what we want. And honestly, most of the time, we don't. I've been there. Pushing for success, for bigger goals. Generating $10MM in annual revenue. Becoming a senior pro pickleball player. Having my daughter attend a prestigious school. But I'm learning a better question to ask. "How do I want to be remembered?" I've been thinking about this a lot. As a father, I want to be remembered for showing integrity, hard work, and resilience. As an employer, I hope to be remembered for helping my team grow and develop their careers. When we focus on how we want to be remembered, everything shifts. We start seeing our core values more clearly. We learn how to show up in our lives—every day, in every role we play. I used to think it was all about achievements. What could I complete, win, or earn? But I'm realizing it's about the journey, not the end goal. It's about how we treat people, the impact we make, and the example we set. That's the legacy we leave behind. Ask yourself: How do you want to be remembered? Let that question guide your actions. It's not about reaching a goal five years from now. When I was in 6th grade, I was obsessed with baseball cards. However, I had no money to buy them. But I had an idea. My parents had a lawn mower and weedwhacker. Why not start a lawn service in my neighborhood? I designed flyers on our dot matrix printer, then made hundreds of copies at Kinko's. I distributed them to every mailbox in the neighborhood, hoping for a call. Soon after, the phone started ringing. Just like that, I had my first business. Chris's Neighborhood Lawn Service was born. Every spring and summer, I cut lawns. I even hired a friend from across the street to help. I didn't love mowing lawns. But I liked the sense of accomplishment (and the money). One day, a customer told my mom he thought I was a special kid. He applauded my work ethic. He went on to tell her that I'll do great things one day. At the time, I didn't understand why he said that. I thought every kid worked like me. It wasn't until later that I realized not everyone puts in the same effort. I didn't have the highest IQ among my classmates. Nor did I have exceptional, god-given athletic abilities. Yet, I somehow outperformed most. Why? Because I worked harder. To me, hard work means focus, preparation, practice, consistency, and perseverance. The neighbor's compliment is something I've carried with me. We often overvalue talent and undervalue effort. People who possess exceptional talent are exceptionally rare. However, people who work exceptionally hard are also exceptionally rare. You can't control whether you're born with talent. But you can control how hard you work. Effort is something you decide. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. __ Enjoy this post?
