By consistently recognizing and accepting challenges, she expanded her career into the realms of author and entrepreneur." I never thought that I'd be working in divorce and child custody law. It took me over 2 years to find consistent paralegal employment that worked with me being the only parent to 2 minor kids. Then, in 2012, I met my friend Trish Hazzard at a small business networking event and told her about my need for an entry-level paralegal position with a flexible schedule. The next day, she connected me with the first family law attorney who I worked for. That was a very difficult need to fulfill since very few legal jobs are flexible and most attorneys hire paralegals who already have 2+ years of experience, so thank you to her and God for using her to help me!!! At the time, I wasn't excited about working in family law, but I knew that I needed to accept the challenge as a fairly newly only parent to my kids who had little experience as a paralegal! I'll forever be grateful to the attorney for taking a chance on me! I had worked for the family law attorney for about 1 year when my mentor asked me to do family law work that led me to do the family law work that I do today. It was a huge leap for me because I never wanted to be a business owner and I knew very little about running a business. After gaining another 1.5 years of experience working under an attorney and doing a lot of research on my own and taking low cost business classes, I began to do the work that I do today. I'll eternally be grateful to my mentor, too! Now, I feel like I was meant to work in family law. I love helping my clients and their children live in happier (and sometimes safer) homes!!! "For years, self-control has been seen as the key to success in life, but a review argues that the concept of ‘self-control’ is worse than useless — it is positively dangerous. Any number of studies have shown that people can sometimes restrain themselves from overeating or force themselves to exercise for a short period, but they usually return to their established pattern eventually. Trying to overcome low self-control encourages the use of strategies, like being mindful or distractions, that demonstrably do not work for things like weight loss in the long-term. Reviewing the research on self-control, Professors Michael Inzlicht and Brent Roberts argue that psychologists have mixed up self-control with conscientiousness. Conscientiousness, unlike the usual conception of self-control, is a personality trait: it is a mostly enduring property of people over their lifetimes. It is conscientious people that have all the advantages in life: they plan ahead, stick to those plans, have defined desires, are healthier and consequently live longer. But, surprisingly, conscientious people do not exert more self-control, in fact they use it less. So, all the purported benefits of self-control are really the result of conscientiousness, which has way less to do with self-control than was previously thought. The concept of self-control should be abandoned in favour of conscientiousness or ‘planfulness’, the study’s authors write, “We wonder if we should abandon the term ‘self-control’ when referring to traits and instead refer to conscientiousness. Consider the alternative universe if we had settled on the name ‘planfulness’ or ‘consideration of future consequences.’ Success in life might be the result of engaging less in day-to-day willpower and more in cold calculation before a temptation is ever met. (https://lnkd.in/gQpXi3uq) What types of domestic violence / abuse are there? - physical violence / abuse - cutting, hitting, pushing, punching, biting, strangling, squeezing, throwing things at a person, sexual assault, restraining movement, and not allowing a person to receive medical care; - emotional / mental violence / abuse - threatening to do any of the things listed above, threatening to do any of the things above to someone else, not allowing a person to do normal daily activities without the abuser present, isolating a person from friends and family, frequently saying disparaging things about a person, ignoring a person, and not allowing the person to receive medical or mental health care; and - financial violence / abuse - not allowing a person access to or knowledge of his/her or the couple's financial accounts, not giving a person his/her or the couple's money to buy things that are needed, not allowing a person to help make decisions about how his/her or the couple's money is spent, not allowing the person to work or work more than part-time or advance in his/her career, and not allowing the person to have a retirement fund or coercing the person to take money out of the retirement fund.
