We’re celebrating National Intern Day! Interns are important to CHS as a critical source of talent. Beyond that, “for both audiences – the company and the intern themselves – we have an offering that is valuable," says Jay Debertin, president and CEO, who started with the company as an intern with Cenex. Our internship program allows students to develop in-demand skills while working on real projects, be immersed in our businesses and connect with company leaders. Thank you, interns, for your contributions to CHS. #NationalInternDay #CHSIncIntern

One common area for internships at CHS is engineering. Meet Dawson Blakeslee, an electrical engineering intern at our refinery in Laurel, Mont. Working at a diversified company is something intriguing, he says. "I had seen myself working in a totally different field of electrical engineering, but with the help of this internship, I can see myself working more in energy." #CHSIncIntern

Part of our CHS intern experience each summer includes helping them be immersed in our business. One way we do this is by taking a group of interns from our headquarters office on a tour of ag retail facilities. This year's tour included a visit to a grain elevator, a refined fuel and propane storage facility and an agronomy campus, all within our Rochester, Minn., business unit. “It is important to expose everyone to the work at hand and have great young minds willing to learn," says Bryan Lewis, senior director of operations at CHS Rochester, who led the tour. "These interns are the future." #CHSIncIntern

In response to the devastating floods that have impacted our employees and farmer-owners in Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota, we've stepped up to lend a helping hand. Together with CoBank and Land O'Lakes, Inc., we're donating a combined $100,000 towards relief efforts to American Red Cross. Funds will support disaster relief in various ways, such as safe shelter, food, supplies and health services. “As cooperatives, we understand the value of joining together to promote the greater good," says Megan Wolle, senior director, stewardship, CHS. "We’re proud to support the Red Cross as they help these impacted communities to recover and rebuild." Learn more: https://bit.ly/3xY3Tj1.

Safety is a core value at CHS. Our environment, health and safety (EHS) team plays a crucial part in keeping safety the top priority in the work we do. Tom Brower leads our EHS team. "We're accountable for helping employees understand and operate with safety in mind, “ he says. "The key is to create a culture that identifies the risks involved with the work being performed, whether that involves grain handling, driving, oil production or other functions, and work to ensure employees have controls in place to protect themselves and others against safety risks." When devastating floods and cyclones hit 50 cities in the Rio Grande do Sul area in Brazil this spring, CHS employees jumped into action. Our team in Brazil donated, sorted, packed and labeled more than 2,300 basic hygiene items and bottles of water to help impacted individuals and families immediately following the storms – and their work continues. Disruptions remain widespread, rains have continued to plague some areas where the water has not yet fully receded, and upcoming cooler temperatures are a concern. The team says they plan to continue donating items until the situation improves. “This tragedy is mobilizing the population in Brazil to send every type of donations to the victims and to help rebuild the state,” says Claudia Ferro, human resources director with CHS in South America. “Our spirit of cooperation is key.”

Our interns had a chance to ask a group of CHS leaders some questions at our headquarters in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., in a recent panel event. Mary Kaul-Hottinger, Gary Halvorson, Rick Dusek, and Brandon Smith met with summer interns, both in-person and virtually. The discussion covered a variety of topics including: setting career goals, receiving feedback, culture and employee retention and more. "Always be willing to change. Look at the possibilities. Have agility and adaptability. That's the future; things change fast." - Kaul-Hottinger "At a company like ours, you can start in one place and follow a passion to other places that might feed a curiosity or help with your professional development... Challenge yourself and chase your passions. It's all fuel for a career." - Halvorson "Try different experiences to help you figure out what you like and if the company is where you'd want to grow your career. Always be learning and meeting people." - Dusek "There's always cycles in business, good and bad. Be known as a person that leans in, asking ‘How can I help?' People will remember those tough times and how you showed up as a leader to help." - Smith #CHSIncIntern
