🚨 Situation Report 🚨 On October 9, Hurricane Milton struck Florida as a Category 3 storm, causing extensive damage. Tornadoes and flooding left over 3.3 million without power and at least nine dead, with 11 million at risk of further flooding. FEMA deployed over 1,000 management staff and 1,200 search and rescue personnel from other agencies. This hurricane follows Hurricane Helene, marking the shortest interval between major hurricanes in Florida’s history. CWS is actively engaging with local authorities and collaborating with fellow organizations. From food distribution to medical aid, we're committed to providing vital services to those in need. Together, we can make a difference. Despite the reduced international focus and withdrawal of some NGOs, CWS remains committed to addressing the growing needs of displaced and returning populations. The new office will focus on providing essential services such as food distribution, medical and psychosocial support, and protection for vulnerable groups, in partnership with local organizations. Newcomers are best welcomed best when communities come together. CWS is incredibly grateful for the generosity of the Christian Reformed Church in North America who graciously donated gently used office supplies for our new CWS offices opening in Michigan in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. Our staff worked alongside Big Lake Movers to move all of the supplies out of the CRCNA Headquarters and into a temporary storage space provided by our new friends at Reach the Forgotten Jail Ministry until our office spaces are available. We are grateful for the new friends and partners we met today who made all of this possible.
