About us
Horse racing in Kentucky dates back to 1789, when the first race course was constructed in Lexington. Almost 100 years later, in 1875, Churchill Downs officially opened its gates in Louisville, and began its tradition as "Home of the Kentucky Derby" and the longest continually running sporting event in America. The World's Most Legendary Racetrack® Known as the home of the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks, Churchill Downs Racetrack conducts Thoroughbred horse racing in Louisville, Kentucky during three race meets in the Spring, September, and the Fall. The racetrack occupies 147 acres, featuring a one-mile dirt, oval racetrack and a seven furlong turf race course. Thoroughbred racing, the Kentucky Derby, and the Kentucky Oaks have run continuously at Churchill Downs Racetrack since 1875. In addition, Churchill Downs Racetrack has hosted the Breeders’ Cup World Championship eight times. Over the course of three centuries, the track has completed several massive renovation projects to modernize its venerable grandstand and clubhouse and to accommodate its more than 165,000 guests on Kentucky Derby Day. Modernization projects have included the construction of private luxury suites and integrated simulcast areas, the installation of permanent lights to operate night-time race programs, and building The Big Board – the world’s largest 4k video screen. The Twin Spires that sit atop the grandstands remain the most recognizable architectural feature of Churchill Downs and serve as a symbol of the racetrack. The spires were designed by architect Joseph Dominic Baldez and were built in 1895 – they shine across the world’s most legendary racetrack each night.

✨ Employee Spotlight ✨ Meet our Purchasing Manager, Sam Eddings, MBA! His first Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs was the year that Country House won at 65-1 odds! He is crucial in ensuring our events run smoothly, as he oversees all our procurement processes and functions. Outside of work, you’ll find him hanging out with his dog, Margot or cheering on the Louisville Cardinals and Chicago Cubs. A passionate Formula 1 fan (Go Lando!), he also enjoys traveling and has checked off 25 out of 30 MLB stadiums on his bucket list!

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month we want to highlight one of our most impactful events of the year. In May, we proudly celebrated the 16th annual Survivors Parade, where we honored 150 incredible breast and ovarian cancer survivors and fighters. These courageous individuals marched the track just before the running of the 150th Longines Kentucky Oaks, inspiring all of us with their strength and resilience. As we continue to raise awareness this October, we want to express our deepest gratitude to our charitable sponsors, Norton Healthcare Cancer Institute and Horses and Hope, for their unwavering commitment to the cause. To all those still fighting, we stand with you. 💖

This past weekend Churchill Downs hosted a fantastic College Day, bringing together students for an unforgettable day at the track. We were thrilled to put together an event that welcomed hundreds of students who enjoyed free admission, exclusive discounts, and exciting giveaways. The highlight was our partnership with the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association, Inc. which enabled us to award $20,000 in scholarships, helping support students from diverse backgrounds, including those in the equine industry! We also want to extend a huge thank you to The Bird's Nest Student Agency for their outstanding support in promoting the event, ensuring College Day was a resounding success!

This morning, team members from Churchill Downs took part in a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, honoring the brave firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. By climbing the equivalent of 110 stories, they paid tribute to the heroic efforts of the 343 firefighters from FDNY, ensuring their legacy lives on and supporting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF). We are proud to stand with our community in remembering these heroes and supporting their families. #NeverForget
