Identify your most critical assumptions and develop the most cost effective experiments that test those assumptions. Our clinicians were lucky enough to learn from Sanji Kanagalingam from WeGuide on how to take an idea and transform it into a digital health proof of concept. Sanji also shared some practice examples of innovations that they have built from scratch! Too many people just go ahead and build tech solutions because they think that they are cool or because they think it should just be done (Centralised *cough* Patient *cough* Record *cough* System *cough*). Building digital innovations in healthcare is rarely limited by technology. Instead it is limited by people and regulation. Many of the challenges that people face when innovating in healthcare is deeply understanding who the buyers are and what they will buy. There are countless problems to solve in healthcare: How do you know which one is worth solving? Once you have found one worth solving, how do you build a solution that customers and users actually want and will pay for? Last week at our design thinking workshop, our clinicians learned the answers to these critical questions. Below are some of the rich insights from the day! Three questions to uncover problems worth solving 1. Will someone pay for it? 2. Is there an unmet need? 3. Is it economically feasible? Once you have identified the many problems in a particular area, you can use the following filters to narrow down to a single problem. o Problem Validation: What facts do you have that this is a problem that customers will pay for it to be solved? o Competitors and existing solutions: How is the problem currently being solved and what opportunities exist for you to innovate if any? o Market size and opportunity: Is this problem worth solving (for you and feasibility-wise)? o Feasibility: How complex is the current environment and how likely could you introduce and implement a solution? Identify your most critical assumptions that will kill your business if proven wrong and develop the cheapest experiments to test your assumptions. They learnt how Marcus and Ray developed their amazing healthcare innovation businesses from just an idea to successful healthcare businesses changing how we deliver healthcare. Below are just a few of the amazing insights. 🛑 You will meet resistance when you are doing something new in healthcare. Ray has changed how type 2 diabetes in indigenous populations is managed. Find your early believers, build evidence and if it works, the masses will follow. 🐄 You can de-risk your idea until the cows come home. At some point you need to make a leap with releasing your product/service. Most people wait to long. 👊 Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. Don't worry too much about your financial projection and a huge business plan in the early days. Generate experiments and test them to find product market fit. WOW! What a day/night for clinical innovation in Melbourne!! We kicked off the day with the launch of the second cohort of the CICA Lab program with another full cohort of clinician innovators and entrepreneurs. The clinicians learnt and explored: - Why do they want to be an entrepreneur/innovator: Impact at scale! - The realism of being a innovator in healthcare: It's hard, but worth it. - How the health system really works: There are a lot of strange incentives that may not seem obvious! - How to find a problem worth solving in healthcare. Use the Mom test and you will arm yourself with the questions that give you the best answers. Then we went onto the evening session. Get Funded! How clinicians can master communication to get money. Dr Amandeep H. hosted an awesome panel that included A/Prof Fiona Brownfoot, Michael Wang and Forbes McGain. They dived deep into the practical realities of raising funds from grants and venture capital. This was before Michael Wang dazzled the audience with a song about raising capital. The CICA Lab clinicians were treated to an in-depth discussion with some of the most active healthcare investors in Australia. The panelists of Dr Amandeep H., Rachel Yang, Samar Mcheileh and Ben Armstrong provided in-depth and personalised responses to each of these questions and more on our latest webinar focusing on Venture Capital and Angel Investing. What are the business models that exist in healthcare? Actually, what even is a business model and how do you use it?!?! What makes a good investment pitch? What do VC's and funders really want to see and are there common traits of pitches that can funds? These are the questions that we answered in last weeks workshop that focused on business models in healthcare and how to pitch to win. The clinicians learnt the fundamentals of business models and practically applied these to their own innovations. Thematically mapping your business model allows you to identify where your assumptions are and how to test them, where your strengths and weaknesses lie and where opportunities exist amongst your competitors. We explored the traits of successful business models and the emerging trends of investable healthcare businesses so that the clinicians can ride this wave. We then put on our Australian Medical Angels hat and we provided the clinicians with the fundamentals on how to create a great pitch deck using our very own pitch deck canvas. Many myths were busted around what information to include in a pitch deck, with one of the most controversial being less is more. Know what your audience cares about, present that and de-risk the investment for them. We wrapped up the day(s) with open mentoring session, where experts sat 1:1 with the clinicians and gave them individualised advice on their careers and businesses.
