Join us in congratulating Lany Herselius, Police, on her upcoming retirement after serving more than 37 years at the city! Lany started her career at the city in 1987 as a part-time communications/records officer in the dispatch center at the Police department. When the City moved the dispatch center to Polk County in 2003, Lany became a part-time records clerk working weekends. Lany said, “There are many things I enjoyed about working at the city, but first and foremost are the people and not just the Police Department (PD) but other city office employees. I have worked with so many wonderful chiefs, officers, and records people over the years. I thoroughly enjoyed my years as a Dispatcher working not only with the PD but also with the Fire Department (FD). Of course, back then we only had one fire station and most of the FD personnel were on call which showed their dedication to the job. When the Polk County Sheriff’s Department took over our dispatch services I was lucky to be able to remain with the Police Department as a records clerk and that is the position I have maintained up until my retirement. I have worked with a fantastic group of people in the Records Department. I always enjoyed helping the public. It is nice to work for a governmental agency where you feel appreciated. The City of Ankeny shows that in all of the things they offer the employees. I can honestly say that in 37 years of working here I can’t recall one shift that I have any complaints about. I am truly going to miss being a part of the Ankeny Police Department staff but will take many friendships and wonderful memories with me.” "Lany has been a dedicated member of the Ankeny Police Department, always bringing a smile and brightening the day of those around her. Her presence has been a true joy, and she will be greatly missed. Thank you, Lany, for all that you've done,” said Chief Darius Potts. Lany added, “I would like to send a huge thank you to all members of the Ankeny Police Department for making my years with you so memorable. The officers do so much for the citizens of Ankeny that most people don’t realize. I’ve seen officers pay out of their own pocket for so many things to make a person’s life just a little easier. They see the struggles and hardships people go through and one act of kindness from them can make all the difference in the world.” Lany’s last official day of work is today, Oct. 27. Congratulations, Lany and best wishes to you on your retirement! Thank you for making a difference in our city for 37 years!

The Ankeny Police Department and the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force will conduct a traffic safety awareness project in Ankeny Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. The project's main goal is to enforce and bring awareness to the move-over law. However, all traffic infractions will be enforced. Iowa's move-over law requires drivers to change lanes when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle, tow truck, or any vehicle displaying flashing lights on the side of the road. If a lane change is unsafe or not possible, drivers must slow to a reasonable speed and be prepared to stop if necessary. This law helps protect people working or standing on the roadside and prevent roadside accidents. Violating this law can result in fines and increased penalties if the violation leads to injury or damage. The Ankeny Police Department would like to remind all drivers to buckle up, drive sober, and drive safely.
