This weekend, the City of Birmingham hosted the 83rd Magic City Classic largest #HBCU #Football game in the nation. Despite the intensely competitive rival, the #Classic serves as a platform for HBCU unification, fellowship, and camaraderie. #puttingpeoplefirst Special thanks to Omari Hardwick for serving as the ambassador for the Classic, retired federal Judge U W Clemon for allowing us to recognize his contributions to the nation, and for RICKEY SMILEY for bringing his live show back to #Birmingham!

In 2022, as war ravaged their beloved country Ukraine, the Vyshyvanyuk family had no choice but to escape into the arms of a new home: Birmingham.A renowned dress designer, Mykola had to go from making beautiful gowns to bullet-proof vests. The people of Birmingham embraced them and made them feel at home. Mykola took a leap of faith and opened NiEl’ Bridal Atelier in Avondale, creating custom and ready-to-wear gowns and wedding dresses. Hear more of their story in the latest #99Voices. #puttingpeoplefirst https://lnkd.in/gZa6UzE2

I recently announced an advisory commission made up of business, community and criminal justice leaders to identify the most promising strategies to reduce homicides in the City of Birmingham. During last week's City Council meeting, I thanked Sheriff Mark Pettway for the county’s help in addressing crime and presenting a united front to protect the resident of Birmingham. The commission will be co-chaired by Ralph Williams Jr., vice president of Alabama Power’s Birmingham Division, and Lee Styslinger, III, co-chairman of Altec Inc. Ralph and Lee will be joined by additional community members and leaders, including Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr, Jefferson County Health Officer David Hicks, and Jefferson County Circuit Judges Michael Streety and Shanta Owens. Helping to guide the commission’s work will be former Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper. Watch the full announcement here: https://lnkd.in/g33hzwET #puttingpeoplefirst

On Shape The Deal, we dive into the hard conversations around community development and inclusivity. Mayor Woodfin’s reflections remind us that while fighting gentrification is tough, facing “Not In My Backyard” (NIMBY) mindsets can be even tougher. The late Mayor Maynard Jackson’s legacy here in Atlanta taught us that when it comes to equitable development, it’s all or nothing. We can negotiate to share in the progress, or we can be left with nothing. Real impact means pulling up a chair at the table, not just for ourselves but for the community we’re serving. Progress requires bold action and a commitment to making sure everyone has a stake in the future we’re building. Subscribe: https://lnkd.in/eZ4D5w-9

Yall!! Please meet these two young ladies. Ms. Reynolds is 92 years young and homebound. She has received a lot of help and assistance from family, strangers, and the City. Perhaps the most help comes from her neighbor and trusted friend. As we pulled up to Ms. Reynolds house, we saw a lady walking up the street towards us. She was there to make sure we got in Ms. Reynolds home. As I walk up to her, she asks me for a hug and says, “I see you on tv, it’s nice to meet you. You taking care of that(my) baby?” I told her yes ma’am and it’s nice meeting you. I asked her name and that’s when I officially met Ms. Minnie. She was proud to let me know she was 98 years young. I told her she looks good and she replied “I’m just slow moving, but I thank God for it baby.” We can all learn from Ms. Minnie who may be moving slowly, but still takes time to be a good neighbor.

I am proud of this!
Last month, we said hello to our LARGEST internship cohort! Each month, our Promise interns gather for a professional development day, where we work with them on their resume, interview skills and workplace skills. Thank you SO MUCH to our current employer partners for believing in the next generation and helping us provide these valuable internships to our students. Our program would not be possible without your partnership. Interested in getting involved with our internship program? Email us at info@birminghampromise.org.
