  • On the evening of Thursday, June 13, 2024, Georgia Entertainment held their "Georgia Unscripted" series at Cinelease Studios - Three Ring , an event for members of the film production world that highlights "local businesses engaged with film, arts, music, gaming/esports and other areas of digital entertainment" in Georgia. Members of the City's Community Development Department team, along with city and county elected officials, Newton Chamber of Commerce, Newton County GA IDA and state representatives and senators, had an opportunity to attend and discuss filming's direct influence on Covington's economy. State Representative and Covington resident Tim Fleming (Georgia House District 114), the City's Tourism Coordinator Laura Sullivan, and Newton County Chamber President Debbie Harper presented to the 400+ attendees about filming's local and state impact. A panel including City Council member Travis Moore and local business owner Lindsey Moore also answered questions about how filming has contributed to Covington's business landscape. In 2022, $115 million was spent by visitors in Newton County thereby positively impacting Covington businesses and the creation of jobs in our community as well as the creation and maintenance of community features such as parks. Visitor spending is directly related to filming as many visitors that choose Covington as a destination are interested in seeing where their favorite television show or movie was filmed. Numbers for visitor spending for 2023 should be released by the Department of Community Affairs in August 2024. #filming #hollywoodofthesouth #georgiaentertainment #discovcov

City of Covington Mayor Fleeta Baggett and Newton County Government Chairman Marcello Banes had the honor of joining Dr. Won Chul Park, SKC CEO, and Jun Rok Oh, Absolics CEO, in welcoming members of the United States government, Senate and House of Representatives to Covington to celebrate the announcement that the U.S. Department of Commerce and Absolics Inc. have reached a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms (PMT) to provide up to $75 million in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act. Absolics, Inc, an affiliate of Korea based SKC, has called Covington home since 1999. Newton County GA IDA and Georgia Piedmont Technical College were instrumental in assisting Absolics, Inc. in securing this first of a kind CHIPS investment. The proposed CHIPS investment would support the construction of a 120,000 square–foot facility in Covington, Georgia and the development of groundbreaking substrates technology to be used in advanced packaging capabilities. This proposed investment would directly support over 1,000 construction jobs and approximately 200 manufacturing jobs in Covington and enhance innovation capacity at Georgia Tech, supporting the local semiconductor talent pipeline with operator training and engineer fellowships. Mayor Baggett had the opportunity to greet Dr. Won Chul Park; Heather Boushey, member of President Biden's Council of Economic Advisers; Undersecretary Laurie Locascio, NIST/Department of Commerce; Senator Jon Ossoff; Senator Raphael Warnock; Representative Hank Johnson; and Jun Rok Oh from the podium as well as brag about our hometown of Covington, Georgia and thank SK for being a trusted community partner since 1976. #intheCOV #community #technologicaladvancements #onenewton #CHIPSforAmerica
