MONITOR DISTRIBUTION: Out of an "abundance of caution," residents who live adjacent to the long-closed City of Covington landfill in Latonia will receive monitors from state and local officials beginning today designed to alert homeowners to any elevated levels of methane and carbon monoxide in and around their homes. https://bit.ly/3AKHCGk CAPTION: The lower area of the now-named Bill Cappel Youth Sports Complex, as seen in a historical photo used courtesy of the Kenton County Public Library. For decades, that lower area was the site of the F.O.P.A. baseball fields in the shadow of the operating City landfill, which closed in 1986.

SAME AS USUAL: Crowds will again flock to the riverfront and viewing spots around Covington to watch the 48th annual Labor Day weekend fireworks on Sept. 1, so the City and its Police Department are putting in place familiar restrictions designed to ensure safety and orderly traffic flow downtown and in Devou Park. The rules address issues like road closures, parking, alcohol, skateboards, motorized scooters, and glass containers and are similar to those from previous years. #LaborDayWeekend #LaborDayFireworks #CovingtonKY https://bit.ly/3Mlcdgp

(Editor’s note: CovData Shorts is a series of articles published regularly by the City of Covington to help residents better understand their City government’s operations.) Just under 60 percent of the tax revenue generated in Covington for the City’s General Fund comes from occupational license revenue (which includes both the payroll tax and net profit tax). The General Fund is the operations fund used to pay the salaries of employees who deliver most City services – such as Police, EMS, Fire, Public Works, and Parks & Rec. This heat map shows where that revenue was generated in calendar year 2023. Thanks to Covington's Manager of Analytics and Intelligence Todd Sink, Ph.D. for providing the data. #taxrevenue #revenue #citytaxrevenue #CovingtonKY #CovingtonNKY

From June into August, Elese Daniel was a Climate Action Fellow with the City, part of Green Umbrella’s regional climate collaborative that pairs undergraduate and graduate students with local governments to provide capacity to help kickstart a community-driven, whole-of-government approach to climate planning, that centers on equity and community resilience. Outside her climate work, Daniel is an equally talented artist and writer with art on display as part of the “Suspended Between Forms” exhibit at The Carnegie. https://bit.ly/3Atlv7j

Mayor Pro Tem/Commissioner Ron Washington spoke at last night’s The African American Chamber of Commerce: Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky (AACC) Exchange Networking Event at Braxton Brewing. “To have you all in this room, considering to invest in our city, is a big deal to me, as a kid who grew up in this town. So thank you – thank you for just being here,” said Washington. Washington told the audience about his own experience as an entrepreneur and business owner, highlighted the City’s 2023 Impact Report, spoke to the importance of the City’s partnership with AACC, and talked about the Covington Central Riverfront neighborhood. In 2022, the City entered into a partnership with the AACC to help nurture the creation and growth of Covington’s Black-owned businesses by making available meeting spaces for free, consulting services, and other resources needed by entrepreneurs. Washington thanked AACC President and CEO Eric Kearney and his team for the impact they make in the city. “Eric and his team have been outstanding to bring people to our city to showcase our city, and I really appreciate it,” said Washington. “Let me give you an example. We’ve got open bids going on for some of the Covington Central Riverfront development’s parcels right now, and we had a day today where people could ask questions. Because of Eric’s team’s work, we had the most diverse group of developers ever in the room for the City of Covington.” The City’s Small Business Incentive Program awards bonus points to minorities, women, and veterans, and has helped more than 150 businesses. The City also financially supports resources to help small businesses grow, such as Aviatra Accelerators for women-owned businesses, and the Small Business Development Center Business Coach. Former Covington Economic Development Assistant Sarah Allan, now the Director of Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program at Cincinnati State, presented as well last night, sharing insights and resources to support Black-owned businesses through the program. #smallbusiness #BlackOwnedBusinesses #entrepreneurs #BlackEntrepreneurs

“Basically, this ordinance is a statement of intent – it announces that Covington intends to permit state-licensed medical cannabis operations, and it lays out where those operations will be able to locate. ... We recognize and appreciate that there are people suffering chronic pain and other medical ailments for which this will be a helpful medical tool, and we’re clearing the way for them – through their physician – to access that.” https://bit.ly/3YE79Ls (Photos used courtesy of Jeff Volter)
