Urban chickens and roosters help address food insecurity in our community by providing your neighbors a way to grow their own food in their backyard. Des Moines City Council is considering changes to Chapter 18 of the Municipal Code (specifically Sections 18-4 and 18-136) relating to “agricultural non-domestic animals and exotic animals” to maintain the health, safety and enjoyment of our residents, as well as protect the welfare of animals. You can find the proposed ordinance changes and share your feedback via the survey at DSM.city/chickens

How long do you think it takes to get all this firefighting gear on? Every second counts when we’re getting our gear ready to respond to a fire. In the academy, we train to do all of this in under two minutes. We timed Firefighter Ankeny (yes, he's with DMFD) going from station uniform to full firefighting PPE. He clocked in, ready to fight a fire in just 1:19! Staying sharp on these skills is just another way our firefighters stay prepared to answer the call and serve Des Moines!

“How much does all that gear weigh?” We get that question a lot when we’re out in public. Fire Medic Flores volunteered to test it out for us, and he weighed in before and after putting on his turnout gear (including SCBA, axe and halligan). His gear came in at a whopping 72 pounds! This puts it into perspective that when you see our firefighters on the scene of a fire they’re doing their strenuous firefighting carrying the weight of a child. Thanks FM Flores for this illustration!
