City Manager at City of Gainesville, Texas

As City Manager of Gainesville, TX, I’m constantly reminded of why I love my job—each day brings unique opportunities to connect with incredible people. On Thursday morning, I had the pleasure of welcoming a group of overseas investors, sharing a taste of our small-town hospitality and showcasing a little bit of what Gainesville has to offer and how our community is developing while staying true to its roots. Then, in the afternoon, I had the joy of being a Bus Buddy at the Boys and Girls Club of Cooke County, greeting kids after school and showing them that their community stands behind them. It’s days like this that remind me just how special our city is!

  • Please help us congratulate Director of the Frank Buck Zoo Susan Kleven on her 20th work anniversary with the City of Gainesville! After starting with us un September 2004, Susan has made key improvements and added exhibits to FBZ that have truly made it the world's greatest small town zoo. She's always on the lookout for how to make the zoo a better experience for animals and visitors alike-- she wants everyone to feel welcomed and appreciated whether or not they have feathers, scales, fur, etc. Susan has a rich background that makes her an asset to the FBZ and the city as a whole with various certifications and continuing education trainings: Care of Furred & Unfurred Joeys; FEMA NIMS, First Aid & AED certification; Gainesville University (alumna); George Mason University: Managing for Success I & II, Creating Successful Exhibits; HAZWOPER certification; Ken Ramirez Animal Training; Leadership Gainesville (alumna); Stop the Bleed Training; Zoo Emergency Response Training; University of North Texas: Graphic Design; University of Texas, Austin: Counseling and Coaching for Improved Performance. And Susan doesn't shy away from sharing her knowledge and experience with others. She empowers her staff to engage in professional development and serves in the Zoological Association of America on the Board of Directors and is the Animal Training Committee liaison, in addition to her work on the Zoological Response Rescue Recover Board of Directors. Not surprisingly, Susan lives by the motto that a job is never "done" because there are always improvements to be made. We see this manifest at FBZ everyday, as there's always something new or some sort of improvement being made in the habitats. If she wasn't in her current line of work, Susan said she'd probably be baking. She also enjoys hiking, birdwatching, and photography. All this to say that Susan Kleven is an important player in the City of Gainesville and the heart of the Frank Buck Zoo. Thank you for all that you do for the zoo and our entire community. We appreciate you!

  • We are thankful for a community filled with agencies who can support our residents when things get tough. On Tuesday, October 1, the Gainesville Police Department and Gainesville Fire-Rescue are co-hosting National Night Out (NNO), a community-building event where residents will be able to meet and connect with many of the resources in our area that are available to them. Better yet, many of these agencies will also have family-friendly games and giveaways! NNO is usually designated as a way for the community to connect with law enforcement. In Gainesville, TX we are transforming this into a way for residents to connect more intentionally into the community by meeting many of our help-oriented organizations: law enforcement, first responders, and supportive agencies like those listed here. We are fostering a fun, positive, no-pressure, family-friendly event to help us build a stronger community.

  • Congratulations to our Gainesville Fire-Rescue (GFR) department on a successful Push-In Ceremony for their new Engine-1. Usually a private ceremony that would be kept to the firefighters on shift that day, GFR opened the bay doors to various members of the community to see the truck before it was put into service. It's especially significant to us as a community because of the art-- the truck's badge was commissioned by a local artist and there are many nods to our designation as the Medal of Honor Host City, a prestigious recognition that we are thankful to have displayed on our emergency vehicles. Congratulations again, GFR. This was many years in the making and we know this apparatus will help you continue to serve our community well.

  • As we wrap up August, we’d like to offer a sincere congratulations to a stellar set of Gainesville employees on significant work anniversaries: Billy Burgan and Ryan Faddis! They are both part of our Water Production Division of Public Works and they even started on the same day, just five years apart! Billy is our Water Production Supervisor, though he started working with us in Streets in August 2004. After his switch to Water Production, Billy spread his professional wings and has accumulated various licenses: Water Operator A, Wastewater Collection III, Customer Service Inspection, Certified Water Professional, Utility Management Certification, and Gainesville University Alumnus. And he’s not showing signs of slowing down, either: he just completed a Water/Wastewater Instructor certification. In his five years, Ryan has also risen through the certification ranks. He has a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and while he started with Gainesville as a trainee, he worked his way through Water Production Operators I and II and is currently a Level III Water Production Operator. He also holds a Class B Surface Water license. Both of these fine gentlemen say they love what they do. Billy says that even if he wasn’t in his current position, he’d still be working with water/wastewater. Ryan says “I believe I’m where I’m meant to be, doing what I can to ensure safe and good water for the city. This job is important for the community and that means a lot to me.” We are grateful to have them on our team and wish them many years of success and happiness ahead.
