City of Hope, one of the largest and most advanced cancer research and treatment organizations in the U.S., has received a historic $150 million gift from entrepreneur and philanthropist A. Emmet Stephenson Jr. and his daughter Tessa Stephenson Brand to fund pancreatic cancer research. The gift is the single largest in City of Hope’s 111-year history. The centerpiece of this gift is the $1 million Stephenson Prize, one of the largest privately funded awards for scientific investigation, which will be awarded annually to a leading scientist or team making the most promising advancements in pancreatic cancer research, treatments and cures. The prize is open to individual investigators and teams driving innovation at institutions around the world. As a national leader in supportive care, City of Hope is proud to be a founding member of the new Together for Supportive Cancer Care coalition. Together with leading organizations across the country that are working to improve equitable access to whole-person cancer care, the coalition aims to create a future where every person with cancer receives the holistic approach to care they need. The newly founded coalition, and our role as a founding member, reinforces City of Hope’s commitment to supportive care and the tremendous impact it has on patients, families and society. Our Department of Supportive Care Medicine was the first in the U.S. to fully integrate supportive care specialties into patients’ clinical care and is now one of the largest programs of its kind today.    Discover the impactful work that we’re doing alongside The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation: https://lnkd.in/ed-uaPwm #SupportiveCancerCare #Healthcare

During Hispanic Heritage Month, Summer Valdez, Ed.D., City of Hope director of Enterprise Learning and Talent Development celebrates her Mexican American heritage with great pride. She reflects on the influence of her grandparents, saying “their legacy, rooted in faith and family, is a reminder of the values they've passed down, shaping who I am today.” Family plays an integral role in her life, especially her supportive parents and husband, Rene. Together, they have three beautiful boys: Benjamin (10), Luca (8), and Levi (7). Luca, who is on the autism spectrum, is incredibly kind, bright and has a great sense of humor. Recently, Summer earned her doctorate from the University of La Verne, dedicating her dissertation research to addressing inequities for women of color, specifically exploring the lived experiences of Latinas in executive leadership. Thank you, Summer, for championing diversity, compassion and honoring those who paved the way for us.

It’s a momentous week in the fight against pancreatic cancer. City of Hope has received a $20 million gift from philanthropists Norman and Melinda Payson to fund groundbreaking research and treatments for pancreatic cancer and diabetes under a newly created pancreas center. The gift, announced at City of Hope’s Promises of Hope gala, builds on the Paysons’ legacy of visionary generosity. Norman Payson, M.D., was the first to donate $1 million toward development of City of Hope Orange County’s cancer center and has invested more than $10 million in City of Hope through the years. This most recent gift is in honor of his mother, who died of pancreatic cancer. The gift is the second significant gift to City of Hope this month to fund pancreatic cancer research. City of Hope, a pioneer in both cancer and diabetes breakthroughs, also received a historic $150 million gift from A. Emmet Stephenson Jr. and his daughter Tessa Stephenson Brand to fund pancreatic cancer research. “City of Hope is known for bringing people together to save lives,” said Kristin Bertell, chief philanthropy officer, City of Hope. “This includes a powerful community of donors and volunteers. Everyone delivers something extraordinary as we come together to end cancer. Together, we can usher in a new era of hope, innovation and speed, shaping a healthier future for all.” Learn more: https://bit.ly/4dlZS6P #HopeFirst #CityofHope #PromisesofHope
