I enjoyed speaking at the 2024 State of Downtown in Houston today! Exciting discussions about the future and the ongoing growth in our vibrant downtown community. ➢ I thanked Central Houston for their partnership in cleaning up Downtown after the Derecho and Beryl. ➢ Last year, I led the passage of SB 1057 which will deliver billions in state revenue to our community. These are dollars that were generated in Houston, and now will be returning to us to realize this bold vision. • With that funding, we’ll expand and modernize our convention center in time for the RNC in 2028. • Additionally, we’re building a new entertainment district on the southeast side of Downtown. This will transform surface parking lots into a destination that attracts millions.

Today, I stood with Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia and representatives of Houston's professional sports teams and major venues. We explained the need for a leadership change at the Harris County Houston Sports Authority as the city prepares to host the FIFA 2026 World Cup. There is a lot of work that needs to be done. We want to show our people, our energy, our diversity, and how great a city we are, but we can only do that if we get the sports authority single-focused on working with these organizations and FIFA. I'm not trying to point the blame to anyone. We have an opportunity to right the ship. All the stakeholders that put on major events have come to me, individually and collectively, saying we have to do something about the Sports Authority — they are away from their core mission.

Houston city council members joined me today in a unanimous vote to keep the city's tax rate the same as last year's. As I have often said, my administration will first look for ways to cut waste and duplication and stop conflicts of interest and corruption before asking Houstonians to pay higher taxes. We voted after Gov. Abbott and the state's leadership announced this morning that Houston and other communities would receive $50 million to remove massive storm debris caused by the Derecho and Hurricane Beryl.

Today, Mayor John Whitmire had the pleasure of meeting San Jacinto Girl Scout Troop 122202 as they worked on earning their government pin. These young leaders shared great ideas for improving Houston, and the mayor was impressed by their passion for the city’s future. It’s inspiring to see our youth so engaged. As the City of Houston monitors the potential tropical storm projected for this week, the Mayor’s Office assures the public that all necessary precautions are being taken to safeguard both residents and infrastructure. Over the past few days, key city departments—including the Houston Fire and Police Departments, Public Works, Solid Waste, Homeland Security, and other essential agencies—have reviewed emergency plans and are prepared to activate them if needed. City officials are working together to position resources and ensure full preparedness for any scenario. The city’s readiness efforts include pre-positioning generators, deploying high-water rescue vehicles, and increasing staffing levels across critical departments. Collaboration with community partners is also underway to maximize the efficiency of the response, should the situation escalate. Public safety remains the top priority, and residents are encouraged to make plans to protect themselves and their loved ones.
