About us

Jacksonville, the largest city in area in the continental United States, is a rapidly growing metropolitan city in Northeast Florida, with approximately 1,000,000 residents. Under its strong mayor form of government, residents elect a mayor and a 19-member City Council, with five at-large members and 14 members elected by district. Donna Deegan is Jacksonville's first female and ninth mayor since the consolidation of Duval County and City of Jacksonville governments in 1968.

Last week, the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville unveiled the newest public art installation in Stockton Park. "Allison's Wings" beautifully honors the memory of Allison Brundick Haramis and her love of dance and the arts. We appreciate the efforts of the Cultural Council, Main Made Studios, and the Angels for Allison Foundation for sharing her memory through this sculpture. Angels for Allison's mission is to help families with funeral costs after losing a loved one. To learn more about Allison's legacy and the amazing work of her foundation, please visit: https://lnkd.in/e8yFXxei

We want to send a big shoutout to all of the volunteers, Keep Jacksonville Beautiful, and Phade for your efforts in hosting and participating in a beach clean up last weekend. They removed 630lbs. of litter from Jacksonville Beach! Thank you so much for keeping our beaches clean and pristine. If you and your family want to participate in one, save September 21st on your calendar for the annual International Coastal Cleanup. There will be dozens of sites around Duval County - stay tuned for locations and start times.

64 years ago today we commemorate Ax Handle Saturday. What began as a peaceful sit-in protest by the NAACP Youth Council at a whites-only lunch counter turned violent when the white supremacists waiting outside with Ax Handles and baseball bats attacked them. Today we take a moment to remember those who were injured, traumatized, and brave enough to protest. #AxHandleSaturday #BlackHistoryIsAmericanHistory

Today marks one year since Angela Carr, A.J. Laguerre Jr. and Jerrald Gallion were taken from their families and our community in a racist mass shooting at the Dollar General in Newtown. Yesterday, we gathered with heavy hearts and with a shared sense of resolve at the new Kings Road Memorial Park. The City of Jacksonville, together with 904Ward, hosted a soil collection ceremony and unveiled a memorial marker to be placed in the park. Thank you for taking a moment to reflect on that day and what it means to our community one year later.

It's a big day for Downtown Jacksonville as Jacksonville University officially cut the ribbon on the permanent home for their College of Law at 121 West Forsyth Street. The new law school campus is yet another catalyst to bring in more people to learn, work, live, and play downtown. "Our strategy is to attract more students, workers, and residents downtown, as well as businesses from target industries," said Mayor Donna Deegan during the ribbon cutting ceremony Monday morning. "Having a law school here will allow us to do both. It’s also necessary to develop an experienced legal workforce to support the increasing number of people and businesses choosing Jacksonville to be their home."
