The City of Lakes Community Land Trust recognizes and celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day today! Excerpts from Office of Governor Tim Walz & Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan official proclamation: "WHEREAS: The state of Minnesota is located on ancestral and contemporary lands that have been called home by Indigenous peoples since time immemorial; and WHEREAS: There is a rich Native American history going back 10,000 years that includes the Dakota, Ojibwe, Ho-Chunk, Oto, Hidatsa, Arikara, A’aninin, Cree, Blackfeet, Assiniboine, and the Sac and Fox Tribes; and WHEREAS: Today, Minnesota is home to the governments of eleven sovereign Tribal Nations – four Dakota and seven Ojibwe, as well as a resilient and robust urban Native American community made up of citizens and descendants of Tribal Nations across the country; and WHEREAS: The name “Minnesota” is derived from the Dakota phrase “Mni Sóta Maḳoce,” which translates to “Land Where the Waters Reflect the Clouds”; and WHEREAS: Indigenous people have made immeasurable contributions to the history, culture, and economy of Minnesota, including traditional knowledge, labor, technology, science, philosophy, industry, and arts; and WHEREAS: Through advocacy and education, the State of Minnesota officially recognizes the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day to promote appreciation, recognition, solidarity, reconciliation, understanding, friendship, and continued partnerships among all people and the Indigenous peoples of this land. Exciting news! Recently, the City of Lakes Community Land Trust had the opportunity to collaborate with Culturingua and the Pathways to Prosperity Coalition as we explored the steps to starting a community land trust (CLT). The San Antonio Report highlighted this important work, which aims to provide affordable housing options in the South Texas Medical Center area, where many of the Middle Eastern, North African, and South Asian immigrant and refugee communities in San Antonio reside. It’s amazing to see how partnerships like these are broadening the definition of community well-being, working toward sustainable homeownership for low- to moderate-income residents.
