During the June 11 City Council meeting, Mayor Jonathan Weinberg recognized June 19 as Juneteenth National Freedom Day with an official proclamation. This City proclamation was accepted by the Co-founder of Justice Vanguard, Kenan Moos. The proclamation read, in part: "Juneteenth reminds us of the horrors of our country's past, commemorates African American freedom, acknowledges the resilience and determination of African Americans who have faced injustices in our society, and pays homage to those who paved the road to freedom in America." To further commemorate this day, the Juneteenth flag will fly over City Hall through Tuesday, June 25, under the City's flag-raising policy. Juneteenth marks the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to free 250,000 people still held in bondage, which was more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. #losaltos #Juneteenth
