Fire Chief Jarrod Wellik announces that the Newton Fire Department has been awarded two grants. The first grant, from the Jasper Community Foundation, provides $5,000 for the purchase of wildland firefighter turnout gear, an application submitted by Captain Ryan Volk. The second grant, from Prairie Meadows, totals $25,000 and will be used to purchase powered stair chairs for patient transportation. This application was submitted by Firefighter Troy Bliss. The total project request was for three chairs costing $47,000. Each chair costs $15,000, so additional funding of $5,000 will be sought to purchase two chairs, with plans to secure funding for the third chair later. These grants will significantly enhance the department's capabilities and improve service to the community.
