(And thanks for keeping your returns these past few weeks) 📆 There will be new due dates of August 31 or later for items checked out before the ransomware event (remember, we never charge overdue fines) See more updates on our recovery at www.spl.org/Update.

Exciting news for Seattle's music scene! 🎉 Earlier this week, Mayor Bruce Harrell and Council President Sara Nelson announced new legislation to make parking and loading easier for local musicians and live music venues! 🎶🚗 We've teamed up with the Seattle Music Commission and Seattle Department of Transportation to gather feedback from venue operators and local musicians about their unique parking and loading needs in the city. "Live music venues are a vital component to our thriving and vibrant nighttime economy and culture. As Seattle continues to grow, it is important that we take measures to support our nightlife, and this legislation will do that." - Director Markham McIntyre Read more: https://lnkd.in/gC5er_hq

Last week, Bitter Lake neighbors shared opinions with Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) and City of Seattle staff about future public art opportunities for the Bitter Lake Reservoir site. The proposed public art opportunities – including sculpture, sidewalk art, and live community programming – were informed by previous outreach efforts where members of the community shared interest to have public art that celebrates the neighborhood's diversity and draws community to the site. This project is a collaboration involving SPU, Seattle Parks and Recreation, the Office of Arts & Culture, and the Department of Neighborhoods to provide the Bitter Lake neighborhood with an improved reservoir, additional open space, and public art. Parks and facilities see a lot of wear and tear from community use and vandalism. Seattle Parks and Recreation’s in-house skilled crafts crews (think plumbers, electricians, painters, and carpenters) work hard to maintain and repair assets to keep them safe, clean, and operational. Last year, we hired 5 additional staff whose role is to respond quickly to vandalism and graffiti in our parks and recreation system. In 2023, this included 658 repairs associated with vandalism in our parks or facilities, such as broken windows, arson in restrooms, theft of copper wiring in athletic field lights, and more. SPR also responded to 1,615 instances of graffiti in our parks or facilities, with 83% cases resolved within six days or fewer, and 95% resolved within two weeks. #VibrantCommunity Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g4ceWMF7

Fun Fact: Every year, SPU’s Landsburg Diversion Dam, which is downstream from the Cedar River Watershed, is taken offline for cleaning and to perform critical maintenance tasks. This is a huge undertaking and includes coordination among all divisions in the Water Line of Business and Utility Operations and Maintenance Branch, as well as support from the SPU Safety Team. It takes about one week to complete the extensive work which includes the removal of sediment in the forebay. While cleaning at Landsburg is taking place, SPU must provide drinking water to the region’s 1.6 million customers from the Tolt River Watershed and other Cedar River sources downstream from Landsburg. A big shout out to the dozens of staff (some pictured here in June) who are involved in this yearly endeavor. Learn more about the Landsburg Diversion Dam at https://ow.ly/HeVz50SJx1b
