Woodland Park is a mountain oasis nestled in the shadow of Pikes Peak, surrounded by Pike National Forest. When the City learned of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to add 120 acres of Open Space to our community, sleeves were rolled up, and folks got to work to make this dream a reality for Woodland Park! On Friday, March 15, 2024, Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) announced they had officially awarded the City of Woodland Park a grant to purchase the 120-acre parcel known as Avenger Open Space. The grant allowed the City to pursue this unique opportunity, providing funding to support the bulk of the purchase price of the land without concerns of burdening our taxpayers. "The effort will preserve critical natural areas under threat of commercial development, maintain the land's ecological health, and ensure continued public recreation access. Palmer Land Conservancy will hold the conservation easement, ensuring this valuable open space and its natural resources continue to benefit future generations," GOCO stated in their press release. The City of Woodland Park is scheduled to close on the Avenger Open Space parcel later this Spring. After the acquisition is complete, more information will be available to the public. The City extends its gratitude to the Woodland Park Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Woodland Park Parks and Recreation Director Cindy Keating, the entire team at Great Outdoors Colorado, Palmer Land Conservancy, the Mayor, and the City Council for their support and dedication to expanding outdoor opportunities for Woodland Park residents.
